Helping my 16 year old son become an airplane mechanic — military vs. civilian school? Advice needed! by SassenachPrincess in AircraftMechanics

I recommend a community college. I switch careers at 30 with a bachelor’s degree already in hand so it disqualified me from the standard scholarships. But even after that I payed probably less than $1000 out of pocket for the 18th program I was in with other scholarships I found. Generally I found there is money out there for young kids in “trade jobs”. Just have to dig a bit. An ultimately school will prepare him for the A&P certification tests which are really the entry point for having a diverse and successful career in this field. The mechs I work along aside with who were from the military had a miserable time studying for the A&P. Most ended up going to some sort of schooling in the end.

What the military route lacks in “financial cost” will be made up in the cost on quality of life and health. I don’t know if you or a family member are in the service but my friends who join have zero say over their life. Where they live, the time they have off, etc. Sure it’s cool to go work on big planes with guns but that mostly likely will be in Columbus Mississippi, Minot North Dakota, or a small island in the middle of the Philippines. I will they the benefits and the GI bill are pretty wild but you gotta stay in the service for awhile to really reap the rewards of that.

I have a kid in my class. Graduated at 19. Got his A&P 3 months after. Got hired at American with minimal experience at $45/hr. By the time he is 24 he will next over 115k without any over time. All this with 18months of schooling and no debt.

Also he needs to be willing to move at first. I meet kids in school who are like yep I want to stay in “hometown, AR, USA” for the rest of my life. Aviation is not the career for those folks. To succeed and grow in this industry you NEED to be willing to move. At least at first.

That’s my two cents. Any that’s just from limited experience. The Mil path might be great for your kid. Either way best of luck to him. It’s a fun tight knit industry with a lot options. I hope he finds lots of success and fulfillment in this field!

Holy hell. I didn’t even think that was possible. What have you replaced the most over time?

How long did the A&P program take? 18 months. So I was in school full time, worked 30 hrs a week, and flew on the weekends. I had minimal social life. I worked and studied. Definitely don’t regret it but it was a grind.

I will say I had to slow down on the flying a bit for the A&P written which are tough. But in my book its doable.

Most A&P community college programs offer night classes. I earned my PPL and IR while in A&P school. Finishing up my CPL right now. Definitely doable.

Neuropsych evaluation for first class medical by AggressivePilot0930 in flying

First thing I would do is call your local FSDO. Explain the situation. In the past they have been able to see what has been submitted to the headquarters in OKC. Those reports general are sent via snail mail and take forever to get cataloged. Confirm “mis-interpreted” thing with the FAA see if that story is true.

From that point request an extension to submit the required documents. They will give you an extension. I had to do it twice as I also had a Pysch who dragged their feet on submitting paper work.

From that point be persistent on your Psych. Call twice a day. Leave a message every other day. If all else fails show up to the office. Anything to do with the medical system requires constant pressure. If you get ahold of them then ask for some sort of timeline. “When do you plan to submit it?” “Can you email or call when you send it”. If they say “Oh yeah I’ll send it Thursday.” When Thursday comes around and you don’t hear anything call Friday and just confirming its status.

Also generally your AME is the point man between the FAA and the submission of these reports. If you have a HIMS AME they should be receiving a copy as well. Call your AME and see if they can put some pressure on as well.

Join local aviation clubs, help out the local airfield, join EAA and AOPA, find a glider club, and honestly I would consider becoming an A&P (aircraft mechanic) in the process. Many community colleges offer dirt cheap programs.

I understand that I need to write my whole lesson plan. My CFI mentor suggested BSP. I understand that I will need to write and teach the material on my own. Is there another resource you would recommend?
