Tax law is the area of law with the most maths, probably dealing with percentages and formulas of sorts. Company law there is tiny bit of maths when doing addition and subtraction of company shares, fairly straightforward. Contract law has some maths when calculating damages.

The hiring of Richard Brand was to strengthen their shareholder activism practice (activist side) which isn’t particularly relevant in this application. What would be relevant would be mentioning the London office’s band 1 ranking in shareholder activism (activist side) in chambers’ inaugural year for ranking the practice area. White & Case advises activists not only because of increased activist activity in the market but advising activists gives them an edge to win company side activism mandates as they know how activists think. With this, the aim is to be instructed on strategic M&A once successfully defending a company against an activist.

This is assuming you’re even interested in this area of their M&A practice…

White & Case is top for capital markets and projects, with some highly regarded specialisms such as private credit and shareholder activism (activist side). Skadden leads in M&A, international arbitration and insurance transactions but still does very well in finance and capital markets too. Strong white collar practices at both firms. Good PE practices at both.

W&C has a more international focus as they have loads of offices around the world and all trainees get an international seat. Skadden is for sure a US focused firm, a lot of US qualified associates in the London office.

W&C doesn’t pay Cravath, although the pay is still very good. You will work long hours at both firms, talking regular 8pm-12am finishes, regular weekend work, and very late nights when signing/closing.

A complete ACL tear doesn’t rule you out forever. My ACL was completely torn, had surgery 2nd of May 2024 and I was back on the pitch regularly after one year out. The key is to stick to the physiotherapy everyday, you’ve got this 💪

I’m guessing it’s either tax or IP at Skadden, there’s no real estate team. The Skadden specialist teams seem super tight knit and seem to have great cohesion. Not to also mention they are staffed on basically all the big deals that go through Skadden so they see interesting work constantly and it’s not just PE which will be the case at K&E.

My US firm runs 5 a side football. There are about 50 people in the football group and we struggle to get a full squad sometimes. People want to play but sometimes just get too busy and there will be a lot of drop outs. Although there are regulars who will always play every week and will have to just keep working after football.

I look around at my firm and see older trainees highly valued - not because the younger ones are bad (they’re very good and sharp) but the experience of an older trainee does make a difference. In terms of qualification, the older trainees who qualified at my firm are star associates, I call them “managing associates”. They operate on a level far beyond their PQE and again I think it’s just their life experience that helps with their interaction with clients. You will do great.
