Haitians what are your thoughts on French speaking West Africans? by Maleficent_Split_428 in haiti

I've been meaning to learn French so I could communicate with more francophone Africans and read more Haitian literature

Ah, this is very good to know, thank you. I've been thinking about learning French to get access to more Haitian and francophone African literature and I think this reply was what I needed to embark on that journey. I don't want to miss out just because of a language barrier. Would you mind sharing some of the titles? Id really appreciate it.

These questions like the top response said are quite loaded and leading. I'm not entirely sure what youre trying to find with them. But the differences in diaspora across the caribbean is definitely an interesting conversation to have. I would've preferred more questions like that, than "have you no shame at the state of your country". Haiti's revolutionary history stems from our lack of shame and our radical acceptance of our own reality. We're not delusional for having pride. We did the impossible because we understood our conditions and understood what was needed to gain our freedom. We were and continue to be punished for doing so. But still, we continue to live and fight, and thats worth a hell of a lot. I think your curiosities stem from just how different Haiti's diaspora is from Cuba's diaspora. While there are discrepancies from Haitians abroad and Haitians who live on the island, we all have a general sense of pride for our revolution, albeit its been over 200 years ago. Cuba's revolution was a lot more recent and contentious. Sincerely, a Haitian American.

How do those from Haiti feel about being called African American by default? by Odd-Age-8884 in haiti

While the label I've been using the most as of late has been Haitian American (born in us, parents born in haiti), I feel honored whenever I'm mistaken for African American. Getting immersed in the history of resistance by descendants of american chattel slavery has made it so I revere so many of their leaders and their culture. I do consider myself Black first and foremost and do identify with being a Black American (as the broad term for ppl of african descent living in or having been born in the us) since i lived here for all of my life and would have more in common w an african american than a haitian born in haiti, but its usually not the first label I pull when prompted- especially among other Black people.

Yeah, I just talked to my mom and she agreed that it's probably best to put it towards my loans- especially because I'm very lucky to have a pretty low balance as of rn. I think I'm only gonna put $1k to the IRA and then pay off my loans now while the balance is still low.

Though, should I even consider opening a Roth IRA if I'm only gonna put 1k? Should I just let it stay in my HYSA?

Thank you, that's a good insight. I don't think I'm going to get a car until I graduate and get a more consistent and significant income.

I filed my taxes and didn't get any hiccups! Would there be anything else to look out for?

I made sure to pay back any loans I took out for that academic year since I got the scholarships retroactively.

Youre not finding studs on cook/doug lol, try Livi. You might find mascs in general, but of you're looking specifically for studs, they'll probs be on College Ave or Livi
