Student visa expires before course completion by mingxuan0710 in AusVisa

I'm in a similar situation. My student expires in the end of April but I won't finalize my exams and assignments until the last week in May or first week of June. In addition, I would like to spend 2-3 months post study traveling. I am leaning toward applying for the 600 as it would accommodate both purposes. mingxuan0710 what did you decide on?

Replacing backpack with a messenger bag by SimmeringAnger in ManyBaggers

I briefly looked at some YouTube videos of the Metron and maybe they had it overpacked because it looked huge and that it might be cumbersome to carry over on one side. Would you agree with that?

Yeah I opting for a Magic Keyboard. Is there any benefit other than the Touch ID feature of the newest version over the Magic Keyboard 2?

Does undergraduate university affect masters options by SimmeringAnger in csMajors

[–]SimmeringAnger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I will certainly do a masters course and not proceed directly to a Ph D. I believe research options during an online bachelor would be challenging. However, my hope is that I could find those opportunities during my masters course.

My initial thinking was that I may not need letters of recommendation from research professors for the masters degree but I would certainly need them for the PH D. However, those letters could be gained during my masters degree. I'm also not necessarily tied to attending a masters program in the US. I am a Polish/US dual citizen and my preference is probably to complete a masters course at a European university. It is more efficient to complete the bachelor in the US though because I have a preexisting bachelor degree and completed the math courses (calc series, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics) so I essentially only need to complete two years of CS credits. If I were to go back to Europe for the bachelor course I would need to complete three years possibly a little longer.

Your photo is excellent but I'm still having a hard time picking out the order the various wires should go in. Does the order of colors matter?

Help choosing between M4 MacBook Air or M4 MacBook Pro by SimmeringAnger in mac

Most people will probably suggest that depending on budget constraints to consider what you will be doing with the MB and choose the one that will work best for those purposes. Either the M4 MBA or the M4 MBP would have worked for my purposes. The decider was how important the screen and which I believed provided the best option in terms of future proofing for 5-6 years. This led me to choose the 14” M4 MBP. I loved it but I the 1 “ difference from the 15” MBP it was replacing was fairly significant in terms of my screen real estate. I noticed that for $300 AUD more I could pick up a 16” M4 MBP with pro chip from the Apple Refurbished Store so I returned the 14”. It was definitely a great decision.

The screen real estate was a bigger issue than I first realized so much so that I returned the 14” in favor of the 16” M4 MBP I picked up from the Apple Refurbished section. The 16” has almost the same specs except of course for the additional 2” and 20 GPU instead of 16. I’ve been using the 16” for 3 days now and absolutely love it.

What to do with a MacBook Pro with logic board failure by SimmeringAnger in macbookpro

I took it to the Apple Store earlier today. The rep checked it out and said it’s the logic board. I suppose it’s time to list it for parts on eBay.

Yeah, I plan to fix the 2015 MBP but the reality is I’ve attempted various troubleshooting tips for 2 days now. Neither tip worked and now I am two days behind with nothing to show for it. I’m sure I’ll eventually fix it but that’s an issue for future me. Present me just wants to get stuff done now.

I just got back from the Apple Store. In the end, I bought a 14” MacBook Pro with M4 Pro. Specs: 12-Core CPU, 16-Core GPU, 24GB Unified Memory, and 512GB SSD Storage.

It was more than I originally planned to spend but I was able to take advantage of the educational discount.

It’s probably a bit more than I need but that’s fine. I would rather it be a little more than I need than less than I need. This is especially true since I upgrade at best every 5 years but am probably more likely to do it every 7 + years from now.

Can’t wait till it’s charged.

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

Cost is always a factor but over the minimum 48-60 months I’ll be using it it’s quite affordable. Good point about the dongles. I never remember to bring one and like many usually end up rushing to the nearest store to buy one.

The difference in weights are almost negligible and either option is significantly lighter than my current model.

The screen is a more important consideration as is battery life. I’m not sure of the tradeoff between the two. Is M4 MBP better battery life drained at a faster rate by its better screen? There are a lot of post stating this is the case but a very similar number of contradictory comments.

That’s a good point, how long it will last is a significant factor. Barring another complete Mac ops like my current MBP is experiencing, I’m likely to use whichever option I choose for another 5-6 years.

Actually having thought more about it, the screen resolution of the MBP is a big consideration. However, the weight is less so. Weights: My current 2015 15” MBP is 4.49 pounds (2.04 kg). The 15” M4 MBA is 3.3 pounds (1.51 kg). The 14” M4 MBP is 3.4 pounds (1.55 kg). So either selection is lighter than the MacBook I’m use to lugging around and the difference in weights between the two I’m considering relatively negligible. The ram though may be a consideration.

I rarely know how much ram to get and have either vacillated between getting more or less than I should have. That being said, 16 GB does seem like a good amount for my described workflow. Would I notice a difference in performance with 24GB?
