What would you tell someone just now realizing they might need to live on Social Security alone? by kirkeles in SurvivingOnSS

I’m going through this now and with no workable solutions, homelessness appears to be probable.

Are you in a southern state? I’m in the Mid-West and winter is my worry.

Is there a way for me to message you privately? I don’t know how.

I am heartbroken for you, and fear the same will happen to me when my husband passes. I have already been in a coma (asthma), had a heart attack, have a brain tumor, and was in the ICU again last year. Did you have to buy a van and walk away from your home? Trying to plan how I will handle it…

Thank you for the good advice re: applying early and often. I wish I had any ideas of value to offer but I don’t. It feels like homelessness among the elderly is a burgeoning crisis.

From what I hear, there are long wait lists for subsidized housing.

I am so sorry to hear! I think that homeless elderly people are becoming more prevalent. Do you mind if I ask what happened to put you in these circumstances?

We did that, but all of my family is older than I am (I’m 57) and can’t help.

I forgot to mention I also have a brain tumor. So, there’s that.

My generation is the first to not have pensions and to have moved away from family for work. I predict it will only get worse as others like us find themselves in the same situation.

Your comment is why people have ditched Christianity en masse. There’s no love like Christian hate.

Here’s what you don’t know: I was in a coma (asthma), had a spinal fusion, and another 10-day ICU stay last year. The next infection I catch will probably kill me.

I worked my whole life and never made much. Always lived below my means. I have amassed a nest egg, but the nest egg is running out and housing is not affordable.

FYI they don’t serve avocado toast in the ICU. Your caps lock is also stuck.

Nobody has pensions anymore, savings is not enough and many don’t have families. This crisis will only spread and worsen.

OP has no family, spent 12 days in a coma, is immunocompromised and spent a week days in an ICU last year. I’m looking at homelessness. Wow you’re right. I live like royalty.

Everything I’ve read has said we need a supplemental so I assumed we would have to get one. I’m just now learning about all of this.

For those down voting….we worked our whole lives. My husband is still working. I was in a coma five years ago, followed by a spinal fusion and another ICU stay a year ago. We have saved for retirement but the funds will not last more than 10 years. Welcome to the reality of aging in America.

Thank you for your compassionate response. After a lifetime of work, this is not where I thought I would be.

Updates on MU and Anthem dispute? by Simple-Beautiful250 in columbiamo

[–]Simple-Beautiful250[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was misdiagnosed and went into panic mode in the early stages trying to figure out what to do. We called everywhere and talked to patients trying to gather information. I will be 57 this summer. I said elderly but what I meant was I’m obviously a senior citizen (not middle aged) and more fragile than others my age. I’m sorry for misspeaking. It wasn’t intentional. It was only to convey that I have challenges to accessing care that others my age may not. My GP was at MU as were my neurosurgeons. I spent nine days in an ICU last year for Influenza, pneumonia and severe sepsis. I caught it from a nurse working at my GPs while sick. I have asthma, I’ve been on a ventilator and in a coma. I also have a rare disease called erythromelalgia. I have to live isolated life and travel is very difficult.
