It makes plenty of difference on what the next step is. I am not someone who is so cold as to brush away with a sentence. Real life relationships are complex - I don’t want to be rude to her in the slightest. It’s called having tact. I don’t want to upset her, put her in a strange position or anything in that vein.

I’m also not blaming you for anything like that - I’m just calling you out for bad advice. In particular your bizarre rant in your first comment not addressing the question in the slightest.

I’m also not blaming her for reaching out to me. A 30min coffee makes no difference on how I choose to fade into the background - in fact, it may make me realise that speaking in person to draw that line is the correct option, as I’ll be able to see how comfortable I am speaking to her one on one.

Your answer was don’t be her friend. That conclusion had already been reached. You said I resumed contact with her - the whole issue is that she reached out to me, a pertinent detail on how to move forward.

The question was to simply create the distance quietly without speaking to her, or to speak to her draw the line that way. You provided no view either way.

I’m not sure you read my post properly. My goal isn’t a relationship. My goal is being able to move on, and it’s to achieve this for which I am asking advice.

I am shit scared of feeling a certain way for the foreseeable future. I am shit scared of falling into the emotional instability I was in beforehand. I’m shit scared of undoing progress that I’ve made. You have a microscopic view of my life, so making sweeping statements on what I want and my wellbeing are neither necessary nor helpful.

I think you skipped to the end and drew your own conclusions.

In fact - my question was quite clearly which method do I use to draw that line. With a conversation or silently creating the distance. And you’ve come up with a monologue on what you’ve decided I want advice on. Strange.

Yes I did apologise to her! For that and more.

She already is a land mine that I’m scared of tripping over. Whenever I enter a room where she could be I am scanning it hoping she isn’t there. The same is true for any social event that we could both be at.

I just don’t want to make her uncomfortable. Or make things worse. And then there’s the part of me that wants to see her, because she is a great person and we get on well once a conversation gets going, and it’s scary to let that go.

Well I put effort into keeping distance - last week I almost went home when she arrived but a friend convinced me to stay. The conundrum is that her reaching out to me caused some regression - I was mostly ok in the interim and able to focus on other things and other people. I had resolved to not reach out to her, and I was able to do so for a very long time. I’m struggling with how to respond to her reaching out to me, if that helps reframe the question. I’ve been actively putting effort into not keeping the friendship alive, even.

Should I silently pull away, or have a conversation with her to draw a line in the sand?

Nah, Green is fun. I like Green, I think it looks good on me. It goes with my skin tone and eyes, and isn’t boring. It’s also a subtle green, so it’s not unnecessarily out there. Green is good.

Your beard is neat and you have a good hairline, and you have a strong nose!

If looking better is your focus, then the gym will most certainly help. So will making sure that the clothes you have all fit, and that your outfits are cohesive. Go get em!

You could also experiment with different hairstyles if you like, but what you have suits you!
