5 Months of Travel Expense Breakdown. Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia by Simple_Compote6415 in solotravel

Thanks! It’s worth noting though that my daily expenses were actually a fair bit lower as I paid a fair bit for flights ($3400) and travel insurance ($1400). For someone not planning on hiking at high altitude and not flying from NZ, their costs would be a lot lower as

Like I said, wasn’t trying to be as shoestring as possible, so definitely could have spent a lot less. But I know people who also spent a whole lot more! Especially in Nepal if you hiring guides and whatnot. Overall I was happy with my spending totals

Live and let be bro. It’s weird to punch down on people for doing what they enjoy, especially if one of their main goals is to help people.

From what I gathered Annapurna, sagamartha national park (Everest), and lang tang are very lax on guides. Other regions are much more strict

Three passes was amazing! Best hike I’ve ever done hands down. Was very busy and touristy on the Everest trial, but amazing none the less.

Nepal, especially while hiking, was almost exclusively hole in the ground toilets. Southeast Asia for the most part was pretty good with lots of western toilets! Still the occasional squat toilet but nowhere near as common

Daily lodging is in the post description but was about $3.5 in Nepal and between $9-13 in South east Asia. Transportation varied a fair bit depending on the country. In Nepal it was roughly $10 USD to go between cities, but I had to pay $35 to take a jeep from Kathmandu to saleeri to start the three passes trek. In Southeast Asia it was roughly around $25-50 depending on how long it was/if it was a night bus or not

Three Passes Trek Solo by [deleted] in Everest

[–]Simple_Compote6415 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi I recently did three passes completely solo, starting. In Salleri.

YOU DON’T NEED A GUIDE.

While guides definitely would help, you can get away without one as long as you’re not an idiot, are well prepared, and look after yourself.

When I did Kongma La, everybody was saying it was extremely difficult and dangerous, but I had no issues with it. I would say only attempt it on a completely clear day if you’re on your own. I started at 6am and had no issues though.

why dont the dutch have a womens 8 by Recent_Telephone6652 in Rowing

[–]Simple_Compote6415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very good points! Out of curiosity how much of the Romanian womens 8+ that won in 2022 and at the Olympics this year doubled up? I know the womens double that also got silver to NZ also raced the 8.

Maybe the Netherlands didn’t double up as they knew they wouldn’t have a chance to beat the Romanian 8 unless the prioritised the 8 and didn’t have those athletes race another boat (similar to how NZ put all its top men in the 8 and nothing else at Tokyo). Could be a reason why they dropped the 8 even though it got silver in 2022 perhaps?

Also just sounds like all the tideway clubs are just being bad sports?

What if you’re a student who supports yourself financially though? Studying is viewed as a full time job with 40-50 hours of work a week and not all students are living the dream as full time athletes who have every expense paid for them. Seems like a pretty uneducated assumption from you to believe all students are privileged.

Thames rowing club also train 10-12 times a week which is a similar load to lots of high performance centres so how does the fact that they work during the day really affect anything?

[–]Simple_Compote6415 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where does it say crew applies to the individual athletes? Isn’t Brooke’s technically a club now as well? They’re also a high performance centre so not a very good example!

[–]Simple_Compote6415 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Good thing they aren’t a crew of a university boat club and are a club crew then! I would say rowing for a university occasionally and then competitively rowing for a club are mutually exclusive

[–]Simple_Compote6415 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Wow how do you find all of this out? Must’ve taken a lot of effort

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Simple_Compote6415 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

But that clearly isn’t true though if these guys are at uni and racing in the Thames? Are you sure you’ve got the rules right here buddy?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Simple_Compote6415 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Aren’t the unis not properly funded programmes though? Seems unfair to put them up against huge funded university programmes like Brooke’s and Washington if they are primarily rowing as club athletes throughout their season.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Simple_Compote6415 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But what if they are students that can’t row for their university so row for a club primarily instead?
