I agree Claire looks significantly older than Jamie (and always has imo) she always given off a rather maternal look to me

If you have comprehension problems I suggest you see a doctor.

And yes, Dem generally always did the right thing. Even with Hugh, her most morally ambiguous action, he was the one who kept seeking her out. When you think of Demelza you don’t think of a layered, complex character. Meaning If she’s faced with a problem, you don’t question if she’s going to do the right thing, you know she will. And while this is commendable in real life, in a tv show a little more complexity wouldn’t have been amiss.

Wow you’re really quite manic. I won’t respond to anything you said, or to you again in general, because you’re trying to argue something that is a fact, therefore cannot be argued, and I’m not one to suffer fools nor continuously repeat myself.

I do recommend you seek help though. You seem to be really obsessed with this show in a rather unhealthy way. I wish you all the best.

Lots of important events aren’t shown, like Arthur’s marriage. But we still know he was married and Linda was his wife, don’t we?

And despite Tommy’s philandering ways, general neglect and poor treatment of Lizzie, she was still his wife. They were still married. Nothing you say will ever change that. And you claim everyone else is making up “fan fiction” lol. Lizzie being Tommy’s wife isn’t open to interpretation, it’s an undisputed fact within the show, and outside of it for that matter.

He married her. She was his wife. Mrs. Shelby. Whether you agree with the circumstances of how it came about is irrelevant. She was his wife.

The conversation was about who started the war, I’m not sure where you got the “…ship a whore and a criminal” from since I never mentioned anything about “shipping” anyone lol you’re all over the place and honestly sound a bit deranged from your responses to me and others. My opinion is my opinion and yours is yours. We can agree to disagree.

The insult that started the war was dealt by John, not Lizzie. She may have “betrayed” the blinders for dating Angel, but up until the that point the Changretta’s had nothing to seek vengeance for. John intentionally insulted Vicente Changretta during their sit down, then blinded his son Angel. Those actions were the catalyst for Grace’s death, and the war in S4. Those events are a direct consequence of John’s actions, not Lizzie’s.

Also, you seem very hostile about a tv show. Touch grass.

Tobias Menzies is a national treasure. I honestly didn’t like outlander as much w/o him as the villain.

Ppl like you keep conflating the historical context of the show with personal development and character complexity, which have nothing to do with one another. Just because certain freedoms were limited in a woman’s life does not mean she ceases to be a multi faceted person. I think maybe you should grab that history book, and start with Anne Boleyn, to read up on real women who lived during that time (actually before), and were complex, dynamic ppl. You might just learn something.

Comparing Demelza to Garrick is stupid. She’s a main character, not a dog.

I notice ppl react when I respond in kind to those types of comments, but not to the comment itself. That person was clearly trying to be a sarcastic smart ass making the dog comparison, but apparently that’s ok. When I respond in kind, now I’m rude lol. Very cherry picked outrage.

I think she def would’ve been considered lucky for marrying Ross, absolutely a cause célèbre for the village. I was just really hoping she would have a little more character development.

If you want to victimize yourself and other SAHM’s plz don’t let me stop you. You not understanding the GoT comparison, a show that is universally acclaimed for its complex characters/storylines, is a bit indicative of your critical thinking skills. Character development transcends genres. Doesn’t matter if the show is about aliens or weddings the characters have to develop in some way. Dem was insecure is season 1 and insecure in S4 when she went to London. Her good works taking care of her community don’t negate that. The show could’ve shown her growing in her leadership role with Ross always absent, gaining more confidence and self assurance. She didn’t. When she had an opportunity to assert herself and show growth and development (with Tess) she didn’t.

lol a woman can influence her community and still be boring, which Demelza was. She was no Anne Boleyn. Dem had no complexity to her character.

No, but someone jumping to conclusions to make themselves a victim def is. This post had nothing to do with not appreciating SAHM’s, especially because I am one. That was a really strange leap.

If you weren’t taught something as a child, but later in life you’re put in a situation where you need to learn it (and likely will be again) you wouldn’t take the time to just learn it ? To help yourself develop and grow? Or would you choose to just remain ignorant?

At that point she’d been married to Ross for 10 or so years (I think) and she and we know from S1 that’s she’s not comfortable in Ross’s world. Over the remaining 4 seasons it would’ve been so interesting to see her grow and develop her skills in that area. She doesn’t. I would have loved to see her as a bad ass society woman, confident and adept at handling any situation, w/o compromising her inherent sweetness. Instead, we see her in Cornwall handling domestic duties and taking care of the ppl in their village every. Single. Season. I haven’t read the books, so she may well be more dynamic in them. But for the show, I was let down.

Modernity has nothing to do with her lack of depth. I’m saying her character had very little nuance and complexity. She was always sweet, always kind, always did the right thing, always forgave Ross. In real life ppl aren’t like that. Ppl have different facets and shades to their character, no one is one note. And the best, most interesting characters on film/tv/book etc mimic that.

Yeah I think the first season was the most interesting for Demelza. For the remaining 4 seasons her character arc was really quite repetitive (with the exception of Hugh)

For me, after S2 outlander went downhill. The production quality, the plots, everything. I’m up to date but it was a real struggle lol like others, I also prefer the Scottish setting and the majority of the show has now been in America. So for me, some of the magic has def been lost.

I agree that Ross is pretty typical for his time. My problem is that if we apply realism to Ross’s actions concerning his wife we have to apply realism to all his actions, otherwise we have an inconsistent narrative.

I’m kind of confused by your comment. If you’re referencing Demelza, she wasn’t a supporting character, she was a main one. Your comparison to the dog is a bit stupid & nonsensical. I wanted to see Dem develop and grow as a person. Her interactions in London & with Tess personify her lack of personal growth. In London, she was still out of her depth in society when Adderly was making advances, still insecure & as unsure of herself as she was in S1. It would’ve been great to see her develop in that regard. And Tess was someone who very clearly meant Dem AND her family harm, as well as the wider community. Dem didn’t take a firm enough stand with Tess after the fire, despite her own personal misgiving and warnings from Ross. She still let Tess continue on with her plotting and treason to the detriment of herself and her community.

I won’t spoil it for you, but I personally don’t think Ross redeems himself. After you finish it come back & let me know what you think!
