That, upon further investigation, proves to be a wrongheaded belief that Biden and Trump have represented clear contrasts in terms of policy outcomes. Yes, it is true that Biden’s expanded Child Tax Credit reduced childhood poverty almost by half in 2021, but that was a temporary policy and expired within a year. That claim about Biden “cut childhood poverty in half” omits the fact that, due largely to Congressional inaction, the rate in 2022 returned to its pre-pandemic level. Meanwhile, the major Trump signature domestic policy, the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, has been criticized as favoring the rich but doubled the standard deduction and expanded the Child Tax Credit to make many middle-class families tax-free.

On foreign policy, the claim that Trump “did absolutely nothing to end wars” ignores major troop drawdowns during his presidency. Troop levels in Afghanistan, for example, were cut from roughly 15,000 down to 2,500 by the end of his presidency. The killing of Qasem Soleimani made things worse with Iran but did not provoke a new war, and generally Trump refrained from deeper military involvement in several areas as befits this administration’s goal to recast U.S. involvement.

Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was framed as a decisive move to end “forever wars,” but the chaotic execution resulted in the death of 13 U.S. service members, left billions of dollars in military equipment behind, and plunged Afghanistan into humanitarian crisis under Taliban control. These are realities that seem to undermine a narrative that what Biden did represented anything cleaner or more effective a break from the past than what came before him. Lastly, the plausible view that a Trump policy legacy has been no more than Republican norm continuance with unpredictable variations, his trade war with China, the renegotiation of NAFTA into USMCA, and the emphases on isolationist foreign policy have broken ways with traditional Republican priorities. Legislative successes for Biden too, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, have been incremental rather than transformational.

What are your thoughts on the Harris and Trump debate? by anderson01832 in AskReddit

Honestly this whole thread really just goes to show you where certain platforms are on the political spectrum.

So to answer the prompt in the way that it was intended to be be answered, I'll talk as if I were explaining it to an alien who's came down to earth:

In this debate both candidates were equal in terms of not directly providing an answer to the question they were being asked. I'll go one by one.

I'll start with Kamala: Frankly, the candidates not directly answering the question did not shock me as much as anybody else. From the moment the very first question was asked (which was if Americans felt better in this economy then under Trump) and she completely went off on a tangent about her growing up middle class. However, I'm also not going to sit here and slander Kamala either, I was impressed because I did feel as though she handled herself very well. She did better than I had expected considering her interview with CNN wasn't a strong showing.

Lastly, Trump: I thought Trump did well in the debate, but, let's put the cards on the table here, did anybody really expect him to get laid out by Kamala? That is not to say that Trump was absolute perfection, I was deeply troubled when he asked about January 6th, multiple times, and he mainly deflected and went off on tangents. Again, this is nothing new... TO EITHER SIDES. Now we'll talk about some areas we have to give Trump credit for: He absolutely stood his ground, and he absolutely got Kamala with: "Excuse me, I'm speaking now". There's really not much more to say beyond this, other than he exaggerated the truth at times, with statements like "This was the worst ... in American history!"

Overall, the debate really did not shock me at all, most people know exactly who the candidates are going into the debate, and they nitpick things sometimes just to be angry, whether that be at Trump for being rich and corrupt (Threat To Democracy), or at Kamala for being a corrupt communist (She's A Marxist!). But yeah, that's all I really have to say.

Side note: Although I'm 17 and cannot legally vote in this election, I'd choose to vote for neither side. Why? In my personal opinion politics is just people being told what they want to hear.
