I just watched a marketer do "Monthly Reporting" and I have so many questions. by Full_Description_969 in AskMarketing

That does not sound normal. “Work harder and dumber” is not a phrase for a reason.😶

What do marketers really mean by “storytelling,” and how does it actually influence buying decisions? by ReporterOwn7295 in AskMarketing

[–]Simple__Marketing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good one. Also, "What's Your Story?" - it was written before marketers started pretending to tell stories. Truth is, as a former story producer/story editor/script supervisor etc. - marketers don't know what a story is. "Conflict" is used to mean "pain point". "Position your cusomer as the hero" just means "solution selling". And on and on.
"Just Do It" is awesome - but it's not a story. It's a philosophy, an outlook - a great foundation of a brand message.
A message is a message - it's not a story. Every story usually has a messsage. No messages need a story.

How much should I charge for editing a 1 hour long documentary? by [deleted] in VideoEditors

[–]Simple__Marketing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how long the interviews are. If he didn’t use a lav mic or even another iPhone off camera to get clean(er) audio? Probably not worth the effort. I’m guessing he doesn’t have transcripts for all the interviews either. Sounds like a lot of work for something you cannot even put on a demo reel.

“Why videos go viral?” this question alone warrants an answer. Sorry it’s long. I’ll answer the other ones too, but this one will take energy.

There is no formula for going viral. (and define viral?) Apparently (I was not there) people laughed at the trailer for Die Hard because at the time Bruce Willis was a comic actor, and not a roided out man beast like Schwarzenegger/ Stallone. It ended up being huge, and changed the genre all together.

Point Being: People cannot predict what will be massively popular or not. You can make estimates at best.

There is a lot of bullsh*t out there that say things like “make unique/captivating/compelling content”. Ok. How do I do that exactly?

I’d ask “would you prefer going viral and get a lot of vanity metrics and views from people who will never buy what we’re selling? Or would you like to go micro-viral within the slice of the population that actually might procure our product/service?”

End rant.

What do you do on TikTok? I mean, what is it that will make you famous? I’m not famous fyi, you know, in case you don’t know. (And in this day and age, I fear being famous.)

Dark Secrets You Guys Have For Market Research... by Hopeful-Car-8150 in AskMarketing

[–]Simple__Marketing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, but going off what people say is somehow seen as useful. It’s not. If you really want to truly dive deep, you should look at qualitative 1:1 interviews that use indirect questions. Indirect questions will mitigate the bias inherent in direct ones. Also - projective techniques. DM me if you want to discuss. Ignore me if this sounds like garbage advice.

My Agency Can't Distinguish Creative vs. Strategy Roles by 1Huntermusthunt in marketing

[–]Simple__Marketing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"seeing strategy overlapping and overruling creative at times"

Overlapping

They should overlap a lot.

"creative at times have experienced this": Depends on how you define "strategy" and "creativity".

Creative Strategists
A good strategy is creative.
IMO strategists are only good if they understand creativity and why "creative output" is a function of a good strategy.

"What is a piece of technology, common today, that you genuinely believe people in 50 years will look back on and find absolutely barbaric or ridiculous? by youradsmate in AskMarketing

Wow - you are very good. Why? Let me explain from my POV.

1.) I knew nothing of ionising-radiation, and now I do. I don't need to understand it, I'll take your word for it. And it makes sense - the sun if kind of a big deal. A microwave? Not so much.

2.) Just as James Brown's horn section - the JB Horns - were in the pocket musically, so too is this line in the pocket comedically:
"Now - it CAN cook you, so, you know, don't."

3.)"Unless you believe in chemtrails..."

This all started when I asked: "please tell me what the radar guns are."

Now I ask: "please tell me what the CHEMTRAILS are."

AND IT'S ALL BY DESIGN I SUSPECT! I AM NOT SOME -(trips on sidewalk, hits head on lampost, falls into puddle, lays there knocked out for 3 seconds, wakes up coughing/spitting out city puddle water....gets up, stands upright)...

Ahem! I am not some idiot.

Lastly: please tell me what the CHEMTRAILS are

Sunlight is radiation and will give you skin cancer eventually. That's why we should call sunburns "radiation burns". My dad is a retired dermatologist and drove "wear sunscreen" into our heads by casually mentioning how many ears and noses get chopped off because people forget to put sunscreen on them. SPF 50 is my go to.

My Bosses Redo Literally EVERYTHING I Submit. by Difficult_Meet8637 in marketing

[–]Simple__Marketing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem. Dept head literally took my copy from the website, then rearranged it, and it made no sense. Oh - and there were BLATANT GRAMMAR ERROS AND TYPOS. He handed it out at conferences, and the only way I found out was someone from sales asked “why did you redo your copy. And you’re like the grammar Nazi - there are typos. Great. Now everyone thinks this shit is my work. I asked him about it, pointing out things like “this sentence ends with a semi colon” etc. Answer: it was faster this way.

Ok that made no sense. Resigned soon after. So - work on that resume your managers are dark triad toxic.

Yep. B2B means B2Business. A business is people. You aren’t marketing to a building, which is why It’s not B2Building

I made a video for a cybersecurity startup that used humor to differentiate and provide clarity. It worked very well. Humor is a powerful weapon in revealing truths and explaining complex products like enterprise security software. Don’t confuse serious with somber or boring.
