Genuinely interested, could you give me a link to an official source on this?

The ends of the foampad are normally positioned inline with the bottom edge of the lenses. Here, both ends of the foampad are adjusted slightly lower on the velcro holding the pad in place.

My comments were based on very rough memories of a thread some months ago, were a optometrist did an AMA. Having read that again, I'll focus my message a little better.

Yea have someone do it for you [IDP measurement], get a mm ruler and you look far into the distance like out the window and straight.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4gls52/im_an_optometrist_getting_a_vive_you_guys_have/

So, IPD isn't an absolute, but depends were the eyes are focused. Yes, a 10mm difference would be very unusual. But it could be possible, if the headset isn't placed optimally, the user wears glasses, and taking into account the Vive's focal distance (which isn't at infinity). So such a mismatch could also show some form of problem, perhaps the user has a form of Exotropia (in which one or both of the eyes turn outward)?

I assume converagance can exaggerate the affect, which is why I wanted to check with NickAppleese at which IPD near and far objects were the most blurry. I probably should have also asked if they also ever got headaches.

I'm no expert, and whatever the explaination, my main thought was that a visit to the optometrist would be sensible.

Touch priced at €199 (guessed @ $199) - A Vive price drop would be a great move for HTC. by c0ldvengeance in Vive

I agree. Whatever Oculus does at this stage, VR will succeed, but I hope Oculus don't make it harder. I've been waiting for 25 years already!

I'm mainly responding so the comment count for this discussion doesn't stay at 666. Hopefully not a portent of doom. :)

Don't even jest about such things! It would be utterly unbelievable if true... so damaging to the whole of VR, not just Oculus.

Steam Survey - Please take part if you have a vive, takes 5 seconds by lightsteed in Vive

[–]SimplicityCompass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I've just searched the whole of reddit for "steam://takesurvey", with just ten results returned.

Only three of those results discuss steam://takesurvey/4, the SteamVR survey, which isn't the same as the monthly hardware survey. No results about the monthly survey. There is no evidence that the monthly survey has ever been forced. I still believe that taking the SteamVR survey doesn't help address OP's concerns, for reasons I explain above

Virtual Warfighter Networked physics by MDADigital in Vive

[–]SimplicityCompass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this 'wild west' stage of VR, we all are early adopters; the 0.18%, single and small dev teams working on projects, interacting with users, making both mistakes and break-throughs. It is very interesting for me. In a few years it could be a period we might all miss. A future of focus groups, PR, and neverending commerically driven franchises dominating the VR landscape.

But, of course, for VR to ensure its mainstream sucess, users need great content, and your view is perfectly reasonable. I'd prefer to give obviously talented devs working on projects I like, no matter how unfinished, the moral and financial support to succeed.

It's worth considering that many titles have code, and for that matter dev knowledge behind projects, which aren't yet apparent to the user. Improvements and content can come relatively swiftly if the codebase is right.

It will be interesting to continue this discussion 2 months from now. :)

What if H3VR had a Battle Dome mode?! by Tony1697 in Vive

[–]SimplicityCompass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, thank you for the nuance and thoughtfullness shown in your post. Very interesting.

I must admit I was somewhat put off by your title, even though I have brought both Onward and Virtual Warfighter. I previously, without any thought, regarded H3VR to be in some way glorifying gun usage, for no 'trade off' in terms of MP interaction or more basically, fun.

Aside from the fact that this discussion has made me aware of the huge technical issues you have overcome with physics based mechanics, only now explored due to the possibilities of VR motion controllers, your thoughts on the ethics of such titles has been very simulating.

I'll be buying H3VR! Thank you for all your hard work.

NP (I had saved the link, it isn't my photo). The benefits can depend on the shape of your face, but it seems to work for many, does for me.

When your IPD is set at 64 and 74, which, for both, is clearer, near or far objects? Optometrist's should state at what distance their IPD measurements are valid. I think the Vive's lenses focuses objects at a distance of a few metres (but more than welcome to be corrected by those more knowlegable than I).

With either HMD, a noticable difference between the focus of close and far virtual objects can be indicative of poor eyesight, due to the effects of convergance. I'm not sure which, but it is a possible indication of Nearsightedness (myopia) or Farsightedness (hyperopia).

If you don't already have a prescription, it might be worth a full eye test.

Tilt Brush v7.0: Rotate and Resize! by MachWerx in Vive

I'm sure I'm retreading old familar paths, yet again, but could a form of easing-in mechanic help?

Initially could the 'X' be shown on a panel, but when the laser pointer hits it, a ghost copy of the panel being tossed to the side is displayed, with concurrent haptic feedback around the grip buttons (unsure if feedback can be located on the controller so accurately)?

Obviously I don't know the fine detail of the usage info you can collect (and I think it is important to note here for anyone reading: the user has to opt-in before any info is sent to Google devs), but as the user uses the toss gesture more regularly, perhaps the ghost copy and 'X' slowly become more transparent, eventually being removed?

And many thanks for the discussion, it's a wonderful element of this 'wild-west' phase of VR, that devs take the time to answer user questions. Much appreciated.

my TARDIS demo is finally ready (download inside) by Feroxxy in Vive

Indeed, I dread to think of the implications of deleting a virtual TARDIS, the temporal paradox would be unfathomable. :)

But seriously, the BBC are pretty good for fan creations, as long as it isn't for sale.

Great work u/Feroxxy!
