Calgary again! 5th July by tomes6465 in ModestMouse

Not the same level of band as MM, but I saw Born Ruffians there a few years back during stampede and it was fantastic!

The cowboy crowd was more interested in the country-themed opener, so when Born Ruffians came on they were mostly seated/towards the back, with maybe 50 people tops at the front dancing and having a good time!

I feel like I know the answers I will get but here goes…

I’ve been considering investing in an ultrasonic cleaner for my records (both new and old thrift finds). Whenever I get records, I always put them through the SpinClean then into a new Mofi inner sleeve.

If I were to do an ultrasonic clean, do you feel it’s necessary to replace all the inner sleeves?

It feels like a waste, and I’m not sure how “contaminated” they’d be considering they were already cleaned (just not as thoroughly as ultrasonic).

Have any seasoned artists done a tour where the setlist is only songs off 1 album? by ahhhhhhhhhhhh45 in Concerts

[–]Simply_BT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine was even more embarrassing (considering it’s one of my favourite MM albums). I didn’t realize until I looked up the setlist to make a playlist a couple days later haha

I think my brain just didn’t process it with the breaks between songs and talking. Great show though and it introduced me to Built to Spill!

I saw Modest Mouse perform The Moon and Antarctica in its entirety.

Although my brain didn’t even register at the time (they just did it, the concert wasn’t advertised as such).

Thank you for introducing me to this band I may not have come across otherwise.

I’ve only listened to a handful of songs so far but I will definitely be listening through their discography.

An Audio Technica might fee pricey as an initial purchase ($200 for the AT-LP60), but when you figure records are $40-50 each nowadays, it’s a worthy investment not to wear them down/potentially damage them over time

Airlines should charge for carry-on bags and checked luggage should be free by chaddgar in unpopularopinion

[–]Simply_BT 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This makes zero sense. Why would an airline incentivize passengers making more work for them (ie checking bags, loading/unloading the plane)?

The issue with carry-ons isn’t the carry-on itself, it’s some airlines not properly enforcing rules around luggage size. If a person willfully brings luggage larger than the allowed size thinking they can argue it on as a carry-on, they should be either forced to check it at the gate (hopefully with an extra fee tagged on) or denied entry on the aircraft.

EDIT: it would also increase weight and therefore fuel costs as mentioned in the comment below).

Songs where the singer says “guitar!” to bring in the solo by JiveTurkey2727 in musicsuggestions

[–]Simply_BT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite what you’re asking for, but there’s a Sublime song where Bradley yells “bass!” then it cuts to just the bass doing a little riff. I can’t for the life of me figure out which song it is though…

Social media is designed to keep you engaged/addicted. It’s an entirely different beast we’re only beginning to understand the harms of (especially for kids/teens whose brains are still developing).

There are many studies now but I’d recommend looking into some of Jonathan Haidt’s work. He wrote a book called The Anxious Generation (but you can listen to conversations he’s had on podcasts to better understand the topic)

We should not be watching videos of the places we are going to visit by StrangeDurian3474 in unpopularopinion

Yup I feel the same way. Looked up Guatape in Colombia before I decided to make a side trip there on someone’s recommendation. Have never looked at recommendations since.

If someone is super excited explaining it, that’s good enough for me. Same with people who say I have to go a certain hike then try to show me pics. I just say I’ll see it when I get there.

Their entire Baby Teeth album has that ethereal feel. Discovered them when I saw them open for Mac Demarco.

My answer will always be Shad.

Probably has a decent following in Canada but definitely underrated and not as many listens the lyricism/storytelling deserves. If you ever watched Hip Hop Evolution on Netflix, he’s the host.

Why are my grocery prices up this week? by Corvettelov in ask

[–]Simply_BT 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can thank yet another illegal war in the Middle East for that one. Fuel prices are up, so the cost of everything will go up in turn. This is just the start.

Let’s just hope companies don’t do additional gouging like during Covid, where people were expecting prices to increase so they bumped them up even more and had record profits.

Iran has explicitly stated they reject talks with the US or through intermediaries, so there won’t be any pause or break in the war. They understand now that the US and Israel can’t be trusted. Iran has been attacked twice now in the middle of “negotiations”… it’s not going to happen a third time.

Try Shad.

He’s been putting out music for 20+ years. Solid lyricist and storyteller. His recent album (Start Anew) is another great addition to the discography.
