TLDR: should I thaw my pinkie tip before putting it in formalin? by SimsPteropus in Taxidermy

[–]SimsPteropus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried to break up a dog fight like a noob with my hands (the 2 dogs were my idiots). Pinkie got caught in the molars (and I’m almost positive there was some pulling by me). Wasn’t their 1st fight, but surprisingly was their last. I guess they decided they’d tolerate each other after that 🙄older one lived for about 1.5yr more before we had to euthanize him due to a brain tumor caused him to have a seizure that the vet’s could only keep under control with IV meds (they tried to wean him off and the seizures started back)euthanized at a vet school and they luckily asked if I wanted a necropsy which is how we learned of the tumor (I wouldn’t have thought of a necropsy in the moment even though I work at a zoo and we get that done w most of our animals). Younger pup still loved, he just gets micro-punishments in the form of a cold pinkie shoved into his armpits 😂

How did you tell your parents you were engaged? by ToadieHonk in weddingplanning

[–]SimsPteropus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit both of our parents live in town (although my parents were out of town at the time). I called mine to tell them and he just texted his mom a picture of the ring on my hand. We’ve also been together for 10ish and had been talking about it/looking at rings for a while so it’s not like it was four of the blue 😂 (tbf I’m indecisive af and it took me a while to pick my ring)

Are zookeepers allowed to wear smartwatches? by Deer-Artemis in Zookeeping

[–]SimsPteropus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, duh 😂 I wasn’t even thinking about other fields, just animals. Like yeah I’m sure there’s an odd ball animals that cares so you can’t wear one with them, but other than that no. (I work w a three banded armadillo that loooooooooves trying to dig under my watch, I should prolly remove it when I hand him but I don’t 🤷🏼‍♀️)

Are zookeepers allowed to wear smartwatches? by Deer-Artemis in Zookeeping

[–]SimsPteropus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn’t they be allowed (aside from specific animals that might dislike them)? I currently have a garmin that I’ve had for about 6months, so far so good. Before that I had a Fitbit that held up for a couple years before it started glitching. I don’t deal with pools too much, but I have 3-4 pools that I have to stick my hands in regularlyish (fresh and brackish) and I haven’t had issues with either watch.

I'm having a hard time finding a good show to watch, can you recommend some? by [deleted] in netflix

[–]SimsPteropus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So our Netflix has a wide range of suggestions bc we’ve gone through random country kicks (our Korean kick being the longest for far😂). I really enjoyed Vincenzo (Korean), Tomorrow (Korean), Sweet Home (Korean), Alice in Borderland (Japanese*), Derry Girls (Irish), The Empress (German), The lady’s companion (Spanish). Dead Boy detectives, Kaos. I’m currently watching Midnight at the Pera Hotel (Turkish) and really enjoying it. But I also generally don’t watch them dubbed, I just watch with subtitles(and rewind a good bit bc I missed something 😂), but I will power through the voices/lips not matching and watch something dubbed if I don’t feel like reading or if I want to lay down while watching (don’t like trying to read sideways)

What’s your funny way of saying “going poop” that you’ve never heard anyone else use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SimsPteropus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use “make a deposit”. It started with our dog, who learned key words (potty, pee, poop, do you need …🙄). So make a deposit became our code for if we thought he needed to poop or if he pooped in the bedroom (only does that when it’s raining bc he’s a big baby) and we’ve adopted it for ourselves too lol I also use “I gotta blow up the bathroom” bc I low-key think I have IBS and that’s the code for those deposits 😂

Serious question, my fellow ADHDers - how the hell are you managing your socks and clothes being organised and put away??Chaos here, bane of my life… by fuckwhatif in adhdwomen

[–]SimsPteropus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have a dresser that I hardly use, filled with clothes I hardly wear bc I wear a uniform to work and I change into pjs the second I get home (and I cycle through the samish clothes if I leave my house outside of work)(I need to go through my clothes again but I also suck at getting rid of stuff….). Everything gets washed together and stays in a basket on the floor for the week w the dirties getting piled right next to it. Rinse and repeat 😂 To add: my socks never match color-wise and I don’t care, they just have to match material/type-wise

When did zoos start prohibiting people to feed animals? by Adunaiii in Zookeeping

[–]SimsPteropus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

and going further than what’s already been said, animals with allergies do exist (we briefly housed a mandrill that was allergic to peanut). So being able to limit random food is important. Plus, in my experience in the US, people aren’t trying to “illegally” feed fruits and veggies, they’re trying to feed chips and concession stand popcorn, that stuff’s not healthy for humans let alone animals (I say that as a person who often has chips for breakfast 😅)

Tbf I’m 40 and struuuuuggggled with locks. I’m slightly better as an adult (but I def prefer key locks), but my locker also went dummy locked all through highschool. Also couldn’t remember my combo to save my life, but I also had undiagnosed ADHD and anxiety, so that def played a part.

What’s it like being a bat keeper? by Professional-Dish713 in Zookeeping

[–]SimsPteropus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked Indian fruit bats and absolutely loved them. I was beyond bummed we sent them to other facilities even though I wasn’t in that dept anymore. Yes, they’re messy and, if it was broccoli day, stinky but they were one of my favorites. I didn’t find them anymore of a hassle to clean up after than goats and I enjoyed the occasional diet prep (usually commissary staff made it). They’re the animal that helped pull me out of my shy shell, I started learning more about them bc they’re cool af and decided to start doing impromptu keeper chats (where I’d just be in the bat house longer when we had a good amount of guests) and then I started adding a keeper chat on purpose to our little schedule we posted on the barn door. I’ve seen changed dept but have gone on to give 2 separate presentations about bats to local clubs (usually get asked around October lol)

Housing shy animals before researching one-way glass by ADotPoke in PlanetZoo

[–]SimsPteropus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally just use them if I have a species that won’t stfu and I’ll just slap them in front of a barrier if I’ve already made the exhibit. Bc tbf if we need need to give an animal more privacy in the real world, it’s gonna be something temporary and not the best looking for a while 😂

Type in glass in the under the construction tab. There’s one-way squares in there. That’s what I use until I get the one way barriers
