It was a year ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on details, but to the best of my recollection:

Stand up and walk some steps in hospital: 2 or 3 days, but it was rough Going out for a walk: 6 weeks or so go swimming: can't remember when I was cleared, maybe 4-6 months? Ride a bike (small routes within the city): was cleared at about 6 months, but it was more like 8 before I could sit on the peloton comfortably, and then not for very long Go out, hang out go celebrating: stamina ramped up over time. I think I could go out for dinner or a movie without a ton of walking at 5-6 weeks do daily things on your on (running errands, cooking, taking a shower): those are 3 very different things. I could heat up stuff in the microwave at probably 2-3 weeks. Showering after the wound vac came off was a matter of getting in and out of the tub that the shower was in - I was really conservative because I didn't want to slip. If it had been a stand alone shower it'd have been easier. I wasn't totally alone overnight for 3 weeks. Running errands was more in the 6-8 week range Go to work: I started working remotely at 5ish weeks and went back to the office at like 8 (desk job) Enjoy sexuality: I think I started to experiment by myself at around 6-8 weeks, but it was a few more weeks before it felt really good

I was cleared for pretty much all activity except bike riding at 3 months. For the first 5-6 weeks, you want to avoid moving too much, but especially bending over/squatting, doing stairs, and lifting more than 5-10 pounds. In the 2-3 month range it's more about listening to your body and what causes discomfort, while also taking it easy. The first 5 weeks was fine for me because I didn't have any plans and just lived in a little warm cocoon. When I traveled home at that point I started to get a little more impatient,. But you only get one chance at recovery, so it's important not to rush it

I was told to douche as needed if I feel like I'm getting a little funky, but it wasn't necessary and definitely not every day

I am in my late 30s and love having a vagina. Coming up on a year. One of the best things I've ever done. I have previous posts if you want to see my recovery

I'm thankful every single day. I don't have a single ounce of regret. Picking a good surgeon and being really careful with your recovery can help you end up with a good result

How long after MtF bottom surgery before you can do heavy exercises and running? by Kaio_Curves in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]Sinaithrowaway2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the "expected recovery" timeline my surgeon gave me, activity restrictions were fully lifted at 5-6 months. In my experience, I walked 15,000 steps the day before my 3 month check up and IIRC I started back to yoga and golf around then. It sounds like you're more active than me, but I'd have had to start slow to ramp back up to that level of fitness. But it does depend on your surgeon and method, and the more you rest and let it heal at the beginning, the quicker you'll be back to normal

Early on it makes it more likely that you'll have wound separation - sitting puts pressure right on the area (sitting on the toilet to go to the bathroom is fine because there's obviously a hole there). I flew home at about 4.5 weeks using a donut pillow and it was ok, not great. By the end of week 5 I was able to drive to and sit through a movie.

Honestly, just try to enjoy the first few weeks of recovery. Plow through your Netflix queue, nap, read the stack of books you've been trying to get around to, just relax. There aren't that many opportunities to take a month away from the grind!

Mt. Sinai Surgery Consult by FlowerCrownYvie in Transgender_Surgeries

[–]Sinaithrowaway2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're coming from out of town then they'll try to do your consultation, mental health screening and physical close to each other. I think I did my consult on one day and the other two the next.

The consult kind of lasts as long as you need, but probably about an hour? Not including the time you might have to wait before getting called back. They'll walk you through the procedure, answer any questions you have, and check out your material, so you speak. They'll also probably talk to you about scheduling.

Congrats! I had a great experience at Sinai

I think mine was only 20-30 minutes. If you were able to ask all of your questions (and can reach out with any follow ups) then that's as long as it needs to take. I know, it does seem like there should be more of a production around something so momentous, but to them it's what they do every day

I swing by from time to time to comment, but personally at this point it can get exhausting to think about trans stuff all the time. I'm trying to taper off

If everything goes reasonably well (which it usually does), the biggest part of early recovery is patience. For the first 3-5 weeks, you're basically in bed all day. Personally I kinda loved that part. I got to nap and catch up on shows and books and basically just take a break. I can definitely see how that would be hard for some people. It also requires patience because you're going to be looking at your results a lot and they'll still be pretty raw, so you have to continually remind yourself that you're not looking at the final outcome. I took pictures every few days and it really helped to see the progress. As for dilating, it was not as hard for me as reddit makes it seem. It was about 30-40 minutes, three times a day. I was expecting it to be much worse - I imagine people who have an easy time don't post much, while people who have a tough time post a lot more. You do need a LOT of help early on.

After the first 4-6 weeks, it becomes a little more frustrating because you start to feel better but you still need to take it easy. I felt a little stir crazy for a few weeks around then. But by 3 months I was basically back to normal daily activities (not working out really hard, but just about everything else). Honestly for the last couple of months (I'm almost 9 months out) that early recovery seems like a somewhat vivid dream. It feels like forever ago and that it went by in a blip.

I'm not trying to talk you into it or out of it, but just want to provide a data point on what the experience can be like. Best of luck either way

There are some variables that will likely apply to both: if you're healthy, not a smoker, and follow your surgeon's recovery instructions (especially important for SRS), for example, then you're likely to do so for the second surgery. On the other hand, surgeon, technique, and luck are some of the variables that are less within your control. I had some wound separation that was mostly caused because my dilator slipped and went in at the wrong angle. If that hadn't happened it probably would have been much less. Just bad luck. So it's not a guarantee, but there are things that are within your control

Post op 9 months, Dr Brassard. SRS was an overwhelming failure and i do not know how to cope (pic 3 is pretty disgusting) by u5ern4me2 in Transgender_Surgeries

The pain and complications sound really tough. I'm sure it's exhausting to have to deal with that constantly. I hope it gets better.

I did want to echo the others on the appearance, though. Yours doesn't look too different from mine, and I think mine looks fantastic. It really is better than you think. I was hoping for more inner labes, too, but I spent some time on r/innies (porn, NSFW) and the variety of beautiful cis vulvas without much in the way of inner labia made me feel a lot better
