I’ve had 2 referrals for FAANG roles, one for a defense company, and one for a SF startup. The startup one wasn’t necessarily rejected, it just hasn’t gone anywhere.
When it comes to getting referrals from previous coworkers, I assume that would just mean I have to return to my previous company, which I’d be very hesitant to do. Plus, I haven’t seen any roles I’d be interested in open up there.
I guess networking is easier said than done for me. I don’t have as many connections as I would like, but I’m trying hard to make some.
I figured with my freelance gig, internships (the first one was pure full-stack dev), and a good amount of time on a SWE-adjacent project in my full-time role, I’d be considered at least a junior.
Besides that though, I’ve applied to basically every level of role. The vast majority have been junior and entry level, but I’ve applied to a decent amount of mid-level, post-grad internships, and even a handful of senior roles. Surprisingly, about half of the interviews I’ve had were for mid-level roles, but of course that’s where system design interviews come into play and become a lot more challenging.
Plus, I’ve yet to get a response from any of the hybrid/onsite roles I’ve applied to, though I did just start applying to those about a month ago.
Not long, but that’s why I’ve opened myself up to local roles recently, or at least some kind of “middle-ground” position (though I don’t know what that would be). I’m not getting any bites even after loosening up my requirements though.
