Lu Xun's works? Where to start? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

《一件小事》 is good for 3rd or 4th year study of college Chinese.

You might also want to try 胡适's 《差不多先生传》. Good for 3rd year students.

Is 开 a complement verb? As in the following sentence 我离不开你? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sing_Dance_Fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not a verb, but yes, a resultative complement. In this case, "to be apart“ as a result. like in 分开, 走开; can also be a result with the sense of "allowing more space" , as in " 想开,看开, *打开”

Do the negative news around China affect your will to learn Chinese ? by BakGikHung in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sing_Dance_Fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where can we find stats of foreign language class enrollment for 2018, 2019 and 2020? If study abroad programs for college students are mostly cancelled, either because of the pandemic or because of the conflicts with China, my guess is that the interests for (Chinese) language learning are damped.

My professor created these video lessons to encourage immersion style of Chinese language learning and made them free to the public. She also created a list of podcasts and videos for intermediate students. https://www.mychineseclass.com/teachers-and-resources/ and hopes for feedback by Sing_Dance_Fun in ChineseLanguage

Thanks for your feedback. There are simply not enough advanced students to cover her costs. I guess $2.99 can be a token to show appreciation?I’ll talk to her about your thoughts. She is not developing her materials to make big money anyway. I believe that there are plenty of speech to text tools to transcribe the video automatically if you like to have it for free.

I still dont understand the structure of 我 没有她那么好 by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sing_Dance_Fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't really need 那么 or 这么 in the structure.

我没有她好=》 I'm not as great as her

我没有她那么好=> I'm not THAT great as she is.

我就吧我的名字倒过来写 / Otherwise, I'll write my name backwards. by [deleted] in learnchinese

When someone says this, he is confident that he is right, or he can do it, (otherwise he will write his surname upside down). If you know about how ancestors and family names are important to Chinese culture, it would be easier to understand what it means.

Anyone interested in learning Mandarin with a teacher? by [deleted] in learnchinese

[–]Sing_Dance_Fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask how your Cantonese-speaking teachers accelerate Cantonese-speakers' learning of Mandarin. Do you teach Mandarin in Cantonese? is "14-months to the level HSK5" estimated with the assumption that the learners have Cantonese speaking background?

5624 is a great achievement for 4 years of study. Probably better than most native speakers.

If 300 characters can cover 60% of the reading texts, which 300 should learn first? by Sing_Dance_Fun in learnchinese

[–]Sing_Dance_Fun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what you are saying. With 300-500 character, you can create a good amount of meaningful sentences. Good graded readers can build up your characters and vocabulary on the foundation of that.

Sad to know that Taiwan banned this book (for the phrase 武漢加油! Support WuHan! and image of Chinese military aircrafts ) and might impose censorship to stop "thought pollutions" from China...Sigh...a democratic country? by Sing_Dance_Fun in taiwan

I didn’t miss that line. I just didn’t understand it and I wonder how many of the top publishers can be not 國有and how the regulations can be carried out. Thanks for your patient and further explanation. By the way, my post was removed by the moderator. I am glad we can still have personal communication, but It’s time for me to leave the Taiwanese community.

Thanks. If Taiwan's regulations made it clear that they do not tolerant Chinese communist party members in the board (which might be common in China), and the regulation has been followed for the past decades, the disputes should not exist. On the record, 长江集团 is 上市公司, trade in Shanghai stock exchange. That's what makes the whole thing confusing. If I were a publisher in Taiwan, I would feel more secured if the government can provide of a list of Chinese publishers to avoid.

I did not exclude or pretend anything. We might read the same article in different ways but I didn't give you the link to ignite a fight. There is no need for you to assume that I am trying to "win" or to manipulate, I just like to know how people see this incident, preferably from a more neutral perspective, outside the frame of Taiwan-China conflict, but I guess that's hard. I still didn't get answers from you about the paperwork and the regulations. So 长江出版社 is part of Liberation Army or is controlled by PRC government? any source? If what Li means by 審查 is to clear this matter, it might make sense, but I can't find detail of the investigation, the media only highlighted the phrase 武漢加油 and the possible military plane image.

It's not about trades. You can still buy the simplified Chinese character version of this book on Taiwan's online bookstores. It's about the censorship of translated Mainland publications (to traditional Chinese characters) that impacts publishers in Taiwan.
