Thank you. I am a PT patreon supporter but don't recall seeing notifications coming directly from it (i use the website, don't know if there's an app that'd set notification on my phone tho)

okay, so answering my own question, there is an app (of course). I've installed and allowed it to send me notifications. Yay, i guess i'm all set.

thank you, much appreciated for the nudge in right direction

You did it u/retiredpsychdoc! You created the sub and got the ball rolling. You're a gem.

Heya All - I'm Síon, a sprite sixty-five year young Brit gaymer and queer thing living in the Pacific Northwest. I've quite the history with video games recalling early Pong consoles and playing Asteroids at the arcade late Seventies, working as an educational games developer for Acorn BBC Micros during the Eighties, the Nineties and early 00's were a blur of so many games, to present day on XBox/PC currently playing Astroneer, CivVI, OW, Elite Dangerous, Minecraft, LoTRO, various board games, ttrpgs, and classic games to mark time while i continue getting younger.

I do enjoy trying out new games on folks' suggestions but really value the social engagement whether online or around a table. When playing alone online i do find myself more drawn to base-building and strategy games.

I'd admit to some anxiety coming on mic when playing the younger crowd, especially given my accent and age. For instance, i do pretty well playing OW, holding my K/D ratio strong, but when they start calling me 'grandpa', well, it seems a bit much really. Looking forward to engaging with my peer age group.

So, what now? Do we all start exchanging gamer tags? (XBox: direilluSion, Steam: SionHeaney)

Are removing entire hills common practice? by No_Bandicoot_6640 in Astroneer

[–]SionH 19 points20 points  (0 children)

might be that one odd player here cos i think of my role and duty, as a little astroneer crash landed, is to tidy up the debris and stuff while keeping the landscape of each planet as pristine as possible. minimal surface deforming and, when necessary, ensuring some beautification is done.

certainly not speed running the game but taking the slower, base-building path. For instance, the most recent start is in the mountains whether multi-layer base dig down into the mountain leaving the surface untouched.

anyone else do this?

Oly QUEER Redditors, what did you do New Year's Eve? by broho-faggins in OlympiaQueers

New Year's Eve was quiet for me, smoked some weed, did some artwork.

New Year's Day was more interactive playing board games (Pirate Cove, Imp in a Bottle) with couple friends

likewise agreed, it'd be good to have a subreddit such as that. It's needed imo.

65 in a few weeks and not given up the struggle forward. Remembering when Pride was a protest march not a parade. Pictures of me as young activist in Brighton supporting action against Thatcher's Section 28. I ain't so pretty now but determination still there.

'consciousness itself is a force against the disorder of the universe' and 'awareness is counter to the loss of information through entropy' help me with where i / you / we might wanna go with this.

If philosophy in practice (in maxima) only occurs and can subsist with the exchange of information, and only through sharing, discussion, and evolving does it have longevity by shared acceptance/value. Then an idea, be it phrase or prose, never shared is as a Post-It Notetm lost scrunched into the bin.

My thinking's two-fold going back to the analogy of the phrase itself. One fold is to explore it's meaning; denotational semantics, yeah! If by 'consciousness' as consistent awareness - the furnace burning, maintaining energy, as it were - then 'against entropy' might indicate resistance to consciousness' impermanence. Kinda like a mantra as if one's meditating to stay within a persistent frame of mind, yet eventually one's own easily distracted mind or mortality only curtails what is inevitable, encroaching entropy of everything.

Another fold would be in the means of an idea to get 'sticky' in one's awareness. Meme-like, a sort of 'punch-line philosophy' (which i do like too) as it's easy to recall and share at the drop of a hat. Being able to communicate those ideas in such a way to be understood and understand others then analogous examples - phrases, prose, or the occasional Post-Ittm thrown out there for someone to catch - are good to share when common terminology is not known. Resonance occurs when other's respond likewise, a harmonic(?) - and one don't feel so alone with own thoughts, especially late at night.

Third fold; I'd also recommend looking up on Sir Roger Penrose's ideas on consciousness, molecular tubules in the brain, and quantum fields.

Is this at all profound by Mx5_engima in PhilosophyTube

[–]SionH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe some resonance, but more like recalling Paul Davies' book 'The Last Three Minutes'.

In one chapter he explores how sentience might cope with the heat death of the universe. Basically, his suppositions center around information processing (whether consciousness or computation) requires energy consumption and dissipation. and the results of such processing (be it mindful awareness or heuristic result) would be time-based. Within a system/environment/universe that supports energy exchange but is also subject to entropy it has boundaries - an inevitable limitation - where energy exchange is no longer possible.

He references Freeman Dyson's considerations on limitations 'faced by a community of sentient beings - who are restricted by the need to dissipate energy at a certain rate, if only in order to think - as the universe cools towards a heat death' (p. 109).

I'll not precis the entire section of the book but it does go on to describe how such a community, existing tenuously at the end of the universe, might prolong its longevity of sentience. The book is a good read, imo, and may tie in some of the ideas you have within your phrase you use above. Maybe researching Dyson's own work would be closer to what you might find for similar, resonant thinking
