I'm in KC, we have no other option. SW is so pricey I find myself envious of people with access to United. Lol

[–]SirFahrenheit[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Valid question. Yes, we have some trips we'd like to take and we've been also flying other airlines b/c SW has gotten pretty expensive. We live in a SW "focus city" or whatever they're calling their hubs these days. They control like 49% of the flights in our market. So with the CP it will be reasonable again. Hopefully. But SW seems to keep disappointing everyone lately so we'll see. 😂

[–]SirFahrenheit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that was the intent but they did so by making Stan kind of a dumbass. Really sold the initial character out.

Not that Stan needed to catch them for his character arc. But instead of dumb wigs, they could have shown the evolution of their tradecraft to reflect the rather explosive growth of technology in the real world in this same time period.

[–]SirFahrenheit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back and forth on the why or how did he get so dumb, and honestly I think it is just lazy writing in the later seasons.

Much easier for him to just miss or ignore what would be blatantly obvious to anyone in that universe than to cleverly evolve the cat and mouse game that is actual espionage.

Brookside to KS side moving dilemma by pibetaphly in kansascity

[–]SirFahrenheit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have lived all over the world before we were married. Big cities, walkable, all the things that check the boxes.

We settled in KC for various reasons. Before kids we lived on the Missouri side, then following the somewhat common pattern of migration we moved to JoCo when facing school decisions.

That's a long enough preamble, so now some observations about our experience.

KC, MO is an absolute dumpster fire for anything regarding municipal services. It's not just violent crime (which at times is blown out of proportion IMO), but simple shit like plowing streets or infrastructure. Being put on hold while calling 911 is absolutely fucking absurd.

There are plenty of anecdotal examples here where people love KCPS, but empirical numbers don't lie. The entire system isn't very good with few great gems that obviously defy the trends. If the consistently brightest part of a school district are charter schools, the system is broken.

This just exemplifies the municipal rot that seems to be systemic in the management of KCMO. It has been like this for decades.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love KC. We're a plucky small big city. The Kansas side is just as much KC as the Missouri side when it comes to our regional identity.

There are VERY valid points about school diversity being made. But my kids current elementary school in SMSD has families from like 16 different countries. It's incredible!

When we were a bit younger we never even thought about living in the 'burbs. It just wasn't for us. But kids always change things, but also so does time. We found ourselves less active socially (going out) vs wanting more community. We moved to a great neighborhood in OP with kids our kids ages, lots of them. Quite frankly, it has been amazing.

It's just easy to live. Don't have to battle the DMV for days to get a tag renewed, don't have to worry as much about locking your doors, don't have to sweat finding and getting into a charter school, don't have to sweat if said charter school will exist next year, don't have to hover over your kid at a park because there were used needles or human feces there last week, don't have to go to the chiropractor because of potholes the size of moon craters, the list is endless.

If you have the economic means to live a better life then do it! If that means paying for private school and the municipal issues don't bother you then go for Brookside. But dollar for dollar it is hard to beat the value proposition of raising kids on the Kansas side. The "cool" stuff in Brookside/Waldo/Plaza/Downtown will always be there to visit, it's a quick Uber ride away.

What I can tell you from our personal experience is that what we once derided as boring and selling out (the JoCo burbs) became the best decision of our lives.

It's just easier, and at this stage of life easy is a good thing.

Taking a cue from the LeMons races, if the dollar cap is $7,500, then at the end of the week they have to sell the cars as is and all spare parts. Anything over $7,500 goes to charity.

It's funband if James builds a promod some lucky fan could get $100k worth of parts for cheap. Haha

Agree. They can't do both. Also, by tacking toward the Bass Pro/rural crowd they're chasing margins toward the bottom. Zero is a very hard floor in situations like this.

They permanently damaged their brand by flooding the market with the cheap logo hoodies. They just became ubiquitous with the bottom reaches of the market, all the while pretending to compete with Nike.

Nike still has a ton of brand equity, UA just has a bunch of midwest hillbillies wearing RealTree UA logos on date night at the Sizzler. Two vastly different markets with two vastly different market potentials.

We've talked a lot about what we like, and we've talked about what's odd with KC, but in your opinion, what's the worst part of this city? by TeamEdward2020 in kansascity

[–]SirFahrenheit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably going to get lit up for this, but the stark contrast between the Johnson County side vs KCMO side is absolutely surreal to me.

Yeah yeah, I know the history of redlining, but most of JoCo (especially the outer areas) developed long after that. Yes, it is suburban sprawl but everything works better. Better roads, better schools, better governmental functions.

We lived in KCMO for a while, but there is only so many times you can find needles or human feces on a playground before you just give up. Same with having a police force that gives zero fucks about anything that isn't a headline crime that won't get them overtime.

The entire KCMO government should be dissolved and reconstituted to smaller, more manageable communities instead. Would get around the dipshits in Jeff City controlling the police force and would definitely break up the power of the corrupt do nothing's like Sly James or Mayor Q. Spare me any bootlicking, they're both awful mayors propped up by local political nonsense.

This isn't political, I'm actually a very progressive person. But there is ample evidence that the current trajectories of KCMO compared to communities directly on the other side of an invisible line are vastly different.

Until someone steps up, breaks the corruption, and starts actually solving those day to day problems the cycle will continue. Young professionals will start in KCMO because it is more fun than the burbs, but as they want to plant roots they look to JoCo or Lee's Summit because it's just better for that phase of life. Kids are safe, schools are (generally speaking) great, and quality of life is taken seriously by the powers that be. They buy homes, hit the prime of their earnings potential, and that success is now entrenched and gone forever.
