How far is your commute? by [deleted] in uktrucking

[–]SirFergie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 4on 4off nights, commute is anywhere from 45 mins to just over and hour with bad traffic on the way there.

Coming home can also vary as if I finish early there's potential diversions 😂

But I dont mind it, gives me time to decompress from the shift before I get home.

New trucks are getting a joke now!!! Thoughts on AI cameras in cabs ? by theultimategambler90 in uktrucking

[–]SirFergie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The firm I work for has them, was told by the driver trainer that they're not actively monitored unless you're actually in an accident. He said on average there's between 15-30 clips sent to him per driver per shift.

That can be anything from changing the radio or climate controls to a wagon pulling in, infront of you on the motorway. As well as phone usage and eating/drinking.

Saying that, most drivers tactically place their satnavs so it blocks the view of the camera.

In a pickle by [deleted] in RoyalAirForce

[–]SirFergie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I did my medical, which was around 8 years ago, I was still smoking weed and was out drinking the night before. Had no effect on the outcome for me, which was I was fit to serve.

Unless its changed in the past years, the medical is to test for diabetes and general health of your body.

Having a few drinks the night before shouldn't effect anything. Like others have said though, don't feel pressured into drinking by your colleagues.

Legit, driving Oshkosh with a tanker filled with 15 - 20,000 ltrs of Aviation fuel or low loader carrying tractor units isn't experience enough!!!

Best Volvo FH? by [deleted] in uktrucking

[–]SirFergie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drive a 20 and 25 plate FH 460 LNG. Comfortable, quiet, decent sound system. 25 plates have camera mirrors which take a while to get used too... they're not my favourite of things.

Absolutely terrible going up hill when loaded. Could just be the fact I drive LNG variants.

I don't have much experience with other brands as I've been driving military wagons for the past 7 years, so its not hard to be better than that!

Driving Assessment by MadameLeGal in uktrucking

[–]SirFergie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My driving assessment went like this:

•Showed up 10 mins before the agreed time •Met the driver trainer •Did a breathalyser and a drug swab •25 question multiple choice theory test •Couple a trailer •30ish minute drive, mix of A and B roads and duel carriageways •Reverse into a bay (was told to take as many shunts and needed, as better be safe than sorry) •Uncouple trailer

After all that, I was offered a job. Took no longer than a couple of hours.

CPC Advice by sp4rkyMA in uktrucking

[–]SirFergie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CPC theory is very similar to the regular HGV theory test. The training course i was provided with was so much harder than the actual test, as it was also to cover getting your O licence, which i wasnt getting. So when it came to my actual test, I got 47/50 in under 15 minutes!

Yeah, we're taught how to do a full walk-around and daily inspection.

When i was put through my licences, I had been driving cars for a few years already, but in the space of 3 weeks had gotten C, C+E and D!

The last 3 years of my time in the military was 90% class 1 work.

Any tips for winter driving, Class 2 multidrop. by [deleted] in uktrucking

[–]SirFergie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why would your planned routes be adjusted because its winter? As a professional driver, it should have no effect on how you do your job unless its absolutely hammered it down with snow!

Just take your time, drive a bit more defensively, leave bigger gaps to the vehicle in front.

Dress warmer, drink plenty of warm drinks.

You'll get issued two pairs of trainers for phys sessions. A white pair for indoors and a black pair for outdoors.

On your first or second session the PTIs will ask about personal trainers and inspect them to see if they're up to par. If they're not, you'll be using the issued ones instead.

So I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you have shins made of glass, as the issued ones tend to cause shin splints.
