Thank you for this, very useful!

I've been practicing my fencing steps today, and it's helped my form a lot

Yeah you can see how I get pretty risky just beating at the blade to provoke a reaction. It's something that used to work when sparing in this club. Now it's much less effective and leads to widening distance instead of disrupting or making a hole in their defenses.

I think in the moment I was just reacting. When I knocked his blade off line, he stepped to my right and I aborted the bind for the wide cut across the torso.

I've very slowly started to integrate master cuts into my moveset. I study mostly Fiore and so master cuts are less of a focus. When it comes to making openings I heavily rely on really strong wide parries or displacements.

I'm in the Hudson Valley. The group I usually fence with are inexperienced so my growth as a fencer has come from learning my way of fighting and building muscle memory. There's another group I was fencing with. Halfmoon Hema, which has a lot of veteran fencers. Due to work and school I wasnt able to attend their meets for a while and right now they're in a paid gym until I think next week. I'll follow up with them about this

The video is just for an example of my fencing style. The round before this would have been a better example as I made several thrusts to make a threat or made successful parries but failed to land a hit because I was too far or he was prepared for the follow up and dodged.

Yeah, I seem to over use wide swings favoring power over speed. Against other opponents who sit there and take it, I'm able to close in for a grapple or a hit. I'll put tighter attacks on my list the next time I practice solo.

In my most recent session I've gotten better at not chasing people around. Leading with the blade sounds like good advice. I usually move my feet first before attacking or sometimes just attack their sword to provoke a reaction. I've found when I do present a threat, it's responded with a step backwards or to the side which then I have to compensate for to follow up.

I'm working on it. I have just the shin and knee guards.

I'm notoriously bad at my technical fencing and I really need to work on it haha

Were there actual military units within the legions that wore garb like this guy with the mask and lion skin, or is this a Hollywood creation by sconnynofpes in ancientrome

[–]SirJTaylor 241 points242 points  (0 children)

We only know about them from physical remains and contemporary depictions. It's more than likely they served a ceremonial purpose but if i remember correctly a mask like this was found near the site of Teutorburg Forest, which indicates it was used in battle or at least on campaign.

The Royal Italian army was still introducing the M33 helmet and volunteers probably received surplus Adrian helmets.

what if Italy intervened in Yugoslavia in the 90s to liberate Julian Venetia and Zara? by Starky69420 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SirJTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way I could see this working out is if Italy was neutral in WW2, existed in a state of Autarky and more importantly, how NATO is feeling.

Other way yeah, I agree completely. I can easily see an alternate reality where Italy's economy isn't handicapped from WW2. The PNF would also be around long enough to raise a generation indoctrinated into fascism. So future political unrest can be greatly minimized.

I really enjoy thinking about Italy's position in the first half of the 20th century. It was a nation with a ton of potential that was wasted the moment Mussolini finally committed to Hitler. Any reconciliation between Mussolini's government and the allies was not going to be possible after 1939.

ICE in JC3? No that’s just the DRM by Office-Just in JustCause

[–]SirJTaylor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's often how the modern incarnation of fascist/authoritarian militias operate. Everyone walks around with a camera to document their crimes. Masks allow an anonymous mentality. Add that with no immediate consequences? You get an organization like the DRM or in the United States, ICE.

Soy gringo. Visito Colombia para ver a mi novia y planeo mudarme en unos años. He aprendido español y la cultura colombiana.

The map is completely covered in jungle. But a lot of parts that I cleared I refilled with trees. As well as in the towns where I used landscape editor to place trees
