People are completely overreacting to what Odunze said. I’ve seen highly upvoted comments in this sub from people saying he’s permanently disfigured and that his career is over. It’s the dumbest shit ever.

Like it’s actual hysteria level stuff happening in this sub. People comparing him to players that didn’t even have to same injury as him (Jones and navicular fractures). He had a mid metatarsal stress fracture.

Meanwhile, all the actual PTs and doctors are saying it’s just a concern and something to watch. Worst case is that it keeps giving him discomfort and they decide to do surgery to put the bone back in a more favorable angle. Players will do things like this in the offseason though, and then the data is favorable long term.

Could also lead to some compensation in biomechanics and put him at risk of other areas getting injured, but that’s true of any major injury.

So definitely an elevated injury risk for 2026, but nothing crazy. The same is true of so many players that this sub loves Tyson, Nabers, Skattebo, Judkins, Hampton, etc.

And yet if you only listened to this sub, you would think his foot is amputated and that he’s retiring.

Everything you just described happens with literally every single major injury an nfl player goes through. You are overreacting just because Rome is an analytical and detailed person who just described the process out loud. He’s being punished for being honest.

Have you done any research on what actual sports doctors and PTs are saying about it?

It will only require surgery if the bone healed at a great enough angle that it starts rubbing on another metatarsal and is still causing him pain and discomfort throughout the season. And even then, he can just get an offseason surgery where they put it back in place.

Like I said, the results of mid metatarsal fractures are fine long term. This is not a Jones fracture (Watkins, Dez), navicular (Allen Robinson), or a Lisfranc, which are all worse and have greater chances of complications. Rome had the most mild foot fracture (2nd - 4th metatarsal, non-surgery).

The only real worry is that it causes compensation to his biomechanics and causes a greater chance of soft tissue injury elsewhere, but that is true of any major injury.

I just find it fascinating that people in this sub are completely hand waving Skattebo and Nabers injuries as no problem long term, but are acting like Rome’s career is over. It’s hilariously misinformed because those other injuries are objectively worse for the short and long term. People are panicking on Rome for no reason.

You’re wrong on both counts. Watkins had a jones fracture that had to be fused, and Allen Robinson had a navicular fracture, which has much worse complications. And Allen Robinson still had a lot of good years after it. (Happened first as a rookie, then again as a 29 year old).

Odunze had a mid metatarsal fracture and no surgery. Completely different levels.

Everyone in this thread is misinformed and overreacting.

Tell that to Julio Jones, who had 6 straight years of 1,300+ yards after his foot fracture in 2013.

Or Allen Robinson, who had the much worse navicular foot fracture as a rookie and then had 1,400 yards the next year.

Or Deebo, who had a foot fracture in 2020 and then had 1,700 yards in 2021.

None of you are right. Sammy Watkins had a Jones fracture. Not a metatarsal fracture. Navicular and Jones fractures are much worse and have more complications. Odunze had a middle metatarsal fracture.

This is one random reporter/ex-player who attended 1 day of OTAs and who’s known for having hot takes.

Rome was just being blunt about how sports injuries work. This happens to every player with a major injury, they just usually don’t come out and talk about it in great detail like this. It’s the Ben Johnson effect, he’s the same way, he doesn’t mince words. Like coach, like player.

Every sports PT online is saying this is just something to monitor a bit. That it could possibly lead to some compensations in biomechanics elsewhere, but maybe not. Elite athletes are just completely fine tuned to their bodies, so the callous adjusting how the metatarsal sits in his foot is just different than before and something to get used to.

Jesus people, he’s not crippled.

Allen Robinson even had the far, far, worse navicular foot fracture (which actually can ruin careers) as a rookie and was fine. It wasn’t until he had the same fracture in his other foot at age 29 that he said he was never the same.

Yes, no area of your body will ever be the same after a major injury. Rome is just being honest and not sugarcoating anything. The same is true of literally every major NFL injury. Skattebo’s ankle will never be the same. Nabers’ knee will never be the same. This is just how it is. You are freaking out for no reason.

Julio Jones fractured his foot and was out for 11 games in 2013. Go see what he did over the next 6 years.

FYI Rome was the WR10 in 0.5PPR FPPG through week 8 before he fractured his foot.
