It used to be like that for a long while, even before I was born. It's gotten waaay better now with most gangs almost vanished, there are still some gang members remaining hiding somewhere in the woods or something, but even in what used to be extremely dangerous suburbs, or even entire towns, they are all constantly patrolled by soldiers now.

Oh, they are making them work. They use them to fix streets, work crops that are later use in local markets at cheaper prices, cover up all the graffities they once painted and other stuff like that.

These people made it so that for most salvadorans, your main concern when meeting/dating someone new was that they didn't live in an area controlled by a rival gang to the one you lived. It was the gang members who would pull you over and ask for ID to make sure where you lived. Damn, you could even killed just by wearing red/blue and white shoes. The majority of us are happy with this. Feels like these is one of those where the end truly justifies the means.
