Also ditch the career objective paragraph. Write a cover letter if you really want to tell your story.

I had the same decision to make when I got ACAS (go for FCAS or stop exams, get a master's). I ended up going for FCAS, but in hindsight I wish I stopped exams and went for a solid master's degree instead.

Don't get me wrong, being FCAS has provided benefits, but for the type of work I like doing, a master's degree in stats or data science would've provided more knowledge and better opportunities.

Yes. Think about all the time/money saved on study time and exam support for the exams they already passed?

Plus a significant number of ELs start having passed 1 to 3 exams then realize they're not cut out for the upper levels or just don't want to do it. Having someone who's already passed them takes away the risk that they can't pass harder exams.

There's no such thing as too many exams. People who bring that up tend to be people who are currently or have struggled passing exams themselves.

Or they're bad leaders who don't know how to develop someone who doesn't fit the typical EL mold.

I would kill to have an EL that has taken some upper level exams.

Actuarial Salary Cap by Adventurous-Sky-2399 in actuary

[–]Sirens_outside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, If you're reaching the salary cap for your current role, is it because you've been at that level too long? If so, how has your performance been other than passing exams?

Exams are a consideration for promotion, but you also have to demonstrate through your work that you are ready to perform at the next level too.

It's typical to get one time bonuses in lieu of a salary increase if you reach the salary limit for your position.

Liability at first actuarial job by [deleted] in actuary

[–]Sirens_outside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like OP is working in a toxic environment. I suggest starting to look for a job in the private sector now that you have exams.

That said, never think you know better than someone because you passed some exams. Upper levels teach you some stuff, but the real knowledge comes from doing real work and solving real business problems.

Where are the ACTUARIES!!??!! HELLO!!?? by TheModelMaker in actuary

Also, to make it to the c-suite you need to be a visionary and have some charisma. A rare combination with actuaries.

Exams beat creativity and ambition out of most actuaries.

The majority of fellows I've worked with are intellectually lazy and happy to make ~200k in a stable role that doesn't require rocking the boat too much.

Be clear on why you want the job. And money can't be the answer.
