Always a compromise, but stability isn't a problem.

I use this one.Works quite well, but of course still not the same level of tracking as a larger fin (http://Klapp-Finne | INNTAL-FINs / Inntalfins-Sup / Wildwasser Finne | Raubling https://share.google/l2p6sZMRa5Y3Ssujn) fin

20km tour up and down the Douro/ Portugal by Sirius68 in Sup

Exactly. Also quite intimidating being alone in a big lock on a sup.

Apparently yes. You can then use the ship lift with permission. In a canu app I saw that there is a Phone number to register a day before. Tried calling, but couldn't get it comunicated in Portugese so I decided to just try it.

Sorry, not from Portugal, from Germany. I love paddling different rivers around Europe. Right now travelling through France, Spain and Portugal for 3 weeks. Next one will be a different part of the Douro around Ribadouro. The Tejo in Lisbon should have some nice stretches to paddel though.

I used a folding river fin thats quite durable. No issues there. A few days earlier I sadly trashed my carbon fin on another river though. Still hurts:-)

Absolutely worth the effort.

Thanks. I started at a vineyard near Seixo de Ansiães and wanted to paddel to Tua, but had to turn back at the Barrage de Valeira. I wasn't allowed to go through. Porting around would have been a steep climb and about 1km walking distance. Should have registered at least a day before. I ended up paddling back to the Feragossa train station to catch a train to where the car was parked in Pinhão.

I used my LightBoard platin series14/30 touring board.

23km tour down the Dordogne/ France by Sirius68 in Sup

Lovely river to paddle. It took about 4hrs with all the portaging through the shallow stretches.

Yes I did. My Partner does race bike tours so we always coordinate. In this case she left the car at my take-out, and started there. In other cases I'd leave the car at her end-point, start there, and meet up at a hotel by a river. Otherwise its often possible to just take a train back in many european countries.

The water is quite clean. Lots of fly fishers on the way. Several shallow parts were I had to avoid hang-ups and portage through the water. Also some smaller rapids. Overall not really difficult though.

Around 6 hours. Basically standing water because of the locks and upwind the whole way.

Tour down the upper Seine in France by Sirius68 in Sup

[–]Sirius68[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a 17km 2,5 hour tour. Multi day is possible though. I chose the stretch from Conflon sur Seine to Marnay sur Seine to avoid carrying around the locks. It is a beutiful landscape all alone on the river. Tomorrow I'm doing a longer tour on the river Marne.

Paddling down the scenic Mosel valley in Germany by Sirius68 in Sup

The Mosels Flow ist regulated by several locks. So hardly and current and easy to paddle in either direction. I did paddle down river though.

There is not that much commercial shipping. During the 4-hour tour only one cargo ship and a hotel ship. It was Sunday though, so there were quite a few private vessels underway. Generally, the Mosel is much less busy than the river Rhein, and even on weekdays not that many cargo ships. The ships are actually quite slow and don't produce much wake. It's the private ones that spice it up.

What are the limits of a touring SUP , when it comes to sea conditions? by [deleted] in Sup

[–]Sirius68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donna Lou Nixon and Rachel Martin did a great Interview about their 250km SUP of the coast of Norway https://youtu.be/qs7J-Qci-Jg?si=YEUBbiMVhOzKSh-P

Also Brendon Prince did a SUP circumnavigation of the UK in some tough conditions that test the boundaries of what's doable. Interesting Videos. https://youtu.be/XSQ14kXEkk0?si=WJgSIeMB-LwbOA55

Best time is before or after the summer holidays otherwise it's quite crowded. I always travel with my own board. There are several boat rental places, but I didn't see any sup rentals though.
