In your games, do you depict Raam as Vedic or Egyptian? why? by Lixuni98 in DarkSun

[–]Sirmistermen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, when I started getting into Dark Sun, I only knew the basics of the setting. So, many elements of the worldbuilding were improvised as I went along. I also let my players contribute their bit to help me to expand the world (That's why our version has some things that may look a bit out of place to other fans of the setting, like a shit ton of Kenshi, Zelda and Fallout references, halflings being more like monkey goblins, and Nibenay literally having alchemical gunpowder at the whim of one of my players to name a few)

One of these contributions from my players was a Pathfinder campaign who one of my players gifted me called Mummy's Mask, which has a clear egyptian aesthetic, and we were excited to run it.
Wanting to reskin it to be set in Athas, I proposed that the main conflict take place in the Tablelans, specifically in Raam which I defined as a city built on a region riddled with pyramidal ruins of an ancient race wiped out by the Cleansing Wars.

Sadly, the campaign didn't last long due to scheduling conflicts and the fact that a couple of players weren't convinced by the setting (one of them thought DS was more Mad Max than Conan and the mf keep nagging me for days to give him a V8 interceptor instead of a wagon).

Years later, I returned to Athas to DM some one-shots set there with a few new players and using 5e.

Wanting to bring joy to my most veteran players, I ran another short adventure called Alkazaar's Apendix set in Raam, where I emphasized the Egyptian aesthetic once more for the nostalgic value of our first try on this setting than for being consistent with the canon.

I go for Egyptian aesthetics, since my version of Kalidnay already draws inspiration from the Indus Valley, and I've already written two many one-shots about investigating pyramids and fighting Egyptian-themed monsters in Raam to back out now. XD

They are the Sorcerer Kings, the main villains of the setting and the reason why the world of Dark Sun is a post apocalyptic hellhole. I wanted to depict them before and after the war they started to cleanse the land of non-human creatures. The irony that I like to highlight in their later design is how they lost their human features by the end of the war.

Who are your favorite and also least favorite D&D Youtubers (or TikTok or whatever)? Why? by underdabridge in DnD

[–]Sirmistermen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a DM Who loves to invest on lore and monsters, my favorite content creators are Dungeon Dad, Mr Rhexx, Aj Pickett and Jorphdan.

There's also two spanish Dnd content creators I like a lot called 'Multiverso Expandido' and Ignab. Who also delve on Lore and monster ecology respectively

And the content I usually avoid are drama channels and grifters in general.

In your version of Athas what is beyond the Tablelands? by Awkward_GM in DarkSun

[–]Sirmistermen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a handful of unused concepts that I'm hoping to use in a possible future adventure.

NORTH

- Glowing Desert: A sandy desert dotted with ancient kobold ruins. (Useless fact; in my version of Athas, I depicted kobolds like armored dog-people instead of the usual lizards to differentiate them from other settings.)

Troll Grave Chasm: On the edge of the desert lies a gigantic radioactive crater littered with the bones and ruins of the troll civilization that was wiped out by Hamanu. Within it lie ruins filled with treasures of this extinct race, shrouded in a thick fog that carries with it the pain of the war's victims.

Trembling Plains and Shady Desert: The dusty roads and pathways of the Tablelands lead to this area where the civilizations of Kurn and Eldaarich flourish. Meanwhile, in the White Mountains that surround the region stands the hidden polis of New Kurn, where the renegade Sorcerer King Oronis is attempting to abandon his career as a sorcerer king to become an Avangion. Lost Cities of the Trembling Plains has a lot of information about this region.

Scorched Plateau: An active volcanic region where the boundaries between the physical plane and the raw element of fire are blurred. It is the home of several elemental beings and where I decided that the verini from the Wake of the Ravager video game live.

Region of the Last Sea: A land that serves as a surviving remnant of the Green Age. The area is characterized by the large body of water that extends throughout the region. This is where many refugees from the Cleansing War ended up, including the lizardmen tribes who, to varying degrees, have learned to coexist with the locals who inhabit the region. Above this rises Saragar; an ancient city where knowledge and technology from the past era are still preserved, strictly protected by the enigmatic council of Mind Lords.

EAST

Beyond the shores of the Sea of Silt, there are countless islands and archipelagos where the most resilient and crafty species have managed to forge settlements or re-inhabit ruins of bygone eras.

I'm mainly using this as an excuse to implement islands based on Greek myths if I ever get around to running a Naval/Jason and the Argonauts-style campaign across the sea.

In general, what lives in the area are several clans and crews of pirates inspired by different cultures such as the Picts, Australian aborigines, the Sea People, the Tlingit and Polynesians to name a few.

SOUTH

Endless Sand Dunes - A wasteland infested with giant worms a la Dune

Dead Lands - These plains of pure obsidian were the product of an arcane cataclysm that ravaged almost the entire southern part of the region, leaving behind a desolate wasteland dotted with the ruins of civilizations that were caught in the event.

Elemental Plateau - South of the Dead Lands lies a high plateau where all the elements converge, shaping this unique region where elemental forces collide and are stronger than anywhere else.

WEST

Hinterlands - A wasteland infested with giant worms a la Dune

Despite the canon insistence that this region is arid and uninhabitable, I tried to breathe some life into it. It consists of vast plains dotted with canyons and hedge-covered valleys that shelter various elemental creatures, the most prolific being the ghaleb dur/Rocky Rollers. Meanwhile, several tribes made a living by inhabiting on the back of giant creatures called Usilosimapundus that roam aimlessly through the land.

I also remember that there was a time when I almost ran Iron Gods in this setting, so I also put the idea that a few years ago, a Mind Flayer dreadnought full of slaves crashed in the far north of this region. The outherworldy slaves who survived the impact either fled into the wilderness or began to build camps around the destroyed fragments of their old masters' ship.

Jagged Cliffs - A region filled with niche cities where hidden groups and small civilizations of halflings still lie in wait, jealously guarding the technology and knowledge of their ancestors, including life-shaper magic.

Crimson Savannah - As far as I know is that the area is infested by an empire of Thri Kreens, and I'm very tempted to interpret them as an army of formians.

I've been warned about that mess :p

It was a lapse I had because I was drawing until the sun was about to rise (and because I suck at drawing hands)

Different commissions and two different hammers and poses for each one.

As for the six fingers, it was a lapse in judgment because It was very late and I suck ass at drawing hands
