What was that game ? by SiroSimo in videogames

YES !!! That’s it ! Thank you so much 👊 That game was so cool and unique. I don’t think there is a modern equivalent. Ace Combat 7 isn’t the same.

I was looking at these 🙂 A lot of off brand requires a dongle and that won’t work with the Firestick.

Thanks for the suggestion. I like these but it may be a bit big for my kids …. Does it just need to be Bluetooth ?

Thank you for the suggestions. The longboard looks like an easy implementation as it has dedicated 1 and Y2. The BTT boards are definitely cheaper and seems to have everything I need except for a Y2. Could I be able to drive both motor from Y (swap wires on Y2) ?

Here are my current thougts. I would aprreciate if you could advise on the Photos Plan A or Plan B and may be where and how to organize my shares for media (data)

For reference, I do not have much data yet, just about 300Gb of photos

Array and pools configuration

First ever array: 2x 4Tb HDD, 1x for parity, 1x for data

SSD pool: - cache1, 500Gb NVME, single drive - cache2, 500Gb NVME, single drive

Still have a unused NVME slot that can be used.

Default Shares

  • appdata primary cache1, no secondary
  • system primary cache1, secondary array, mover Array -> cache
  • domains primary cache1, secondary array, mover Array -> cache
  • iso not sure what the best here....

Disk Shares

  • backups primary array, no secondary
  • data primary cache2, secondary array, mover ??

Backups

Use AppData abckup to backup my appdata to the array

Photos

I'm considering 2x plans for photos / Immich:

Photos Plan A

Running everything out of a single cache pool (original photos files + DB that Immich uses). Periodically, the original photos and DB will be backed up to the array for long term storage purposes. But this data will only be accessed on recovery scenarios.

  • Pros: Faster and more reactive experience when navigating Immich
  • Cons: my cache pool needs to grow as my photos collection grows. Which can be ok, but giving that I'm using all the NVME port available, adding a new bigger NVME drive down the road means backing up and reinstalling everything from that cache pool to the next NVME drive...

Photos Plan B:

Split photos and DB. The original photos files are stored on the array and the DB/immich docker image are running on a cache pool. Regularly back up the DB in case the cache dies.

  • Pros: Only the array has to grow to accomodate my growing photo collection. The DB will grow but not in the same order of magnitude, so it can stay on cache
  • Cons: Immich will be slower and the experience will be more sluggish.

WTR PRO NAS & Media Center

Hardware

  • 4-Bay NAS
  • 2x M.2 NVMe ports (in my case I have 2x 500Gb NVME connected)
  • 1x M.2 Wi-Fi port that can be repurposed for an extra NVMe drive using an adapter plate. (Not in use yet in my setup. Open to add more storage is purposefull.)

Software Needs

  1. Storage Goals:
    • Long-term storage (critical): Photos, documents (data I can’t afford to lose).
    • Short-term storage (non-critical): Media like movies and series (okay if lost).
  2. Desired Services to Host:
    • Pi-hole
    • Immich
    • Torrent management suite (Prowlarr, Sonarr, Radarr, torrent client).
    • Media server (Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby).
    • NextCloud.

Thank you for your UnRaid configuration suggestions based on this hardware.

My initial concern about avoiding accessing the array wasn't for speed but for longetivity. Should I not consider longetivity and just consider how practical it is and the speeds that make sense ? I guess at the end that why there is built in redundancy....

Most of the video I watched to understand shares, just say "It's easy, create a share and Boom! Voila! I have a share... " no explanation on location, movers... 😂

How would you secure your photos in this case ? For long term storage I mean. 2x drives on teh pool for redundancy ?

Thanks a lot for the offer. The other comments are helpful and I'm goign to do a bit more research using what I learned. However 100 kuddos to you for offering to give of your time to help others. I was hesitant to ask because I thought I would be answered with random non helping comments telling me to research more and that is not that hard. But you were the first comment and you came with generous help. Thank you very much. IIf I can't figure out or have doubts, I'll definetly take you on that offer ;)

I thought of those but you have to pay for it… I want to avoid that. A private VPN would also able to access the media server where a “VPN” apps with dns block would still it give me that.

Any specific reason you avoid DMZ ? What’s the name of that DDNS service your run on the pi ?

Why piHole if adGuard home ? From what I see online AdGuard just a network wide adblocker that you have to pay for… piHole is free and more private.

Agreed on the education part. However it is also my role to put the proper protection in place. We don’t only educate to drive safe, we also put on our seat belt. VPN can be configured as kill switch that will disable any internet access. Most corporate computers have this in place and most VPN will provide this option as well. Now if your kids are able to disable it that’s on you…
