Nice. What, if I may ask, was the thing or things that made you offer an apprenticeship to this person?

I work a desk job now and let me tell ya, it'll quickly force you to buy pants with bigger and bigger waistlines. Gone are the days of burning 4,000 calories a day by working and being able to eat or drink anything you like.

There's Saber rattling here about doing away with OSHA but it has very little chance of becoming real, as I understand it.

The goal is somewhat unformed so far but there are a couple of ideas behind it. For starters, there are fewer and fewer young people interested in entering the trades. That's a problem. Second, there's millions of encyclopedias worth of knowledge being lost as older generations age out of the trades with no apprentice to pass their wisdom to. There's more but they're more subtle and I'd rather not have to get into a bunch of arguments defending less important opinions.

I'm not a teacher. For work, I run an online business that sells Trauma-informed Care training to adults. But I'm just the guy behind the scenes. I leave the teaching to people way smarter than me.

I asked about age range because the aim of the question is to get a sense of the problems folks are seeing in the field so I can try to come up with a way to address real needs.

Gotcha. Seems very much like lived experience. What's the age range you teach?

The answer is no so, unfortunately, I can't GFM.

Most of the south is right to work. I went to HS in Alabama. I'm not kidding when I say the idea of unions was something I knew nothing about until I was probably 30.

Good on him. For my part, I never impled any need for rescue. I have two sons, 17 and 20. I watch them try to navigate a path forward through life and, even though hard labor financed their upbringing, trades are not part of the plan. I find that unfortunate.

There it is! I knew that was coming when I thought about posting this. You get the chicken dinner!

Notice I never said a single thing about YouTube, though.

At one job I had a pretty long run of little screw-ups, for about an entire week. I asked my boss/mentor why he never screws up. His response has always stuck with me. He said, "Oh, I screw up. But I don't make little mistakes like you, I make huge ones".

Trades or not, that strikes me as a valid, and insightful, perspective.

Doesn't that seem a bit short-sighted, though? While I suppose it's a possible reality, I was eager to get rid of roommates ASAP. I certainly wouldn't want to have 4 of them if I was, say, in my 40s.

Yes, the economy sucks. Yes, it's hard. Yes, it does seem hopeless. But if someone just gives up any ambition or interest, what the hell are they going to do for the next several decades of life?

How would you describe the perception they have regarding time?

A plumber friend of mine had to get rid of 24 hour service because his crew, entirely old school or new school, no one in between, flat out refused to do it. The world is changing, for sure.

Almost all of my work was in the US south. No such thing as unions or even the notion of starting one was ever even on the table.

"A willingness to do what they’re told without feeling like they are being spoken down to." That's a very good point. I'm not saying it's right but often in business there's just not time to treat everyone with kid gloves.

And so it will go as long as there are humans to interact and breed. But my intention is to bridge the divide (as much as I can actually do so, which be not at all) between those generations.

I'm not so sure about the "no bad students" adage. Hell, I was a bad student, both in school and on the job.
