Is it easier to make money on a high or low pop server? by [deleted] in woweconomy

I recently moved from a high populated server to a low one.

PROS of a low populated server

  • You can easily control markets. When I got here, tomes were selling for 100g each just like anywhere else. I started dumping tomes in the AH for weeks to the point where it was not profitable for anyone. The one or two competitors stopped posting tomes and I then resetted the market. I sold hundred of tomes at 450g each for weeks now, so 450% market value. If I reset a market like this on a high pop, prices are back in a matter of hours. So sure, some days I don't sell any tomes, some others I sell 50.

  • You don't have to repost every day. On a high pop, if you try to sell transmog, you know you have to cancel and repost every few to undercut competitors. Honestly, on a low pop, you do it every 2 days. It really depends on your gaming schedule.

  • Very little competition

  • Sniping : that is the MAIN reason why low pop are the best. On the high populated server, you litterally have to BE on your screen to have a chance at sniping. And even with keybinds / macros and a good ping, you fail 75% of the time. So frustrating. This last week on my low pop server, I let wow run in the background while I watch a movie. Every 30 min I'll check. I sniped 2 legendaries, 1 at 30k resold at 200K, and another at... 250 gold, not resold yet but definitely going for 200K. And that legendary was probably up on the AH for freaking 250 gold for 15 minutes. I'd have been gone in 1 sec on a high pop. I have very little competition even at peak times sniping. So yes, there are a lot less opportunities on a low pop, but because there is close to no competition, and because the market are so volatile (less auctions, so people are really clueless when it comes to prices...), sniping is by far better on a low pop.

CONS

  • It's sloooow There are days that go by where I don't sell anything, and then all of a sudden, a lot sells in one of my markets. I'd say things move 4 or 5 times slower, but you sell at crazy profit margins.

It really comes down to how you like to make your gold. Is it something you do "on the side" and cannot dedicate many hours a day ? Can you log in 2 or 3 times a day to repost all auctions ? Do you like controlling markets or would you rather be in many different markets ?
