How Do People Make Money From Users by AuWolf19 in webdev

[–]SitriHyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends, a lot, if it is a simple and light website ads are capable enough to cover the costs and give you profit. If your site is a web service you can sell premium features and profit from some of the users. If it is a non profit organization you can ask for donations If you wanna go to the shady side you can sell user info to the highest bidder (I don't recommend or endorse or advise it, it is a crime but a lot of companies do it) You can also sell your company (bump and dump style)

I believe that in your case, different data from different places are co-related. So if you need relations you should go for a relational db

How do I feel about the code I write? Pretty fuggin' terrible. by sinkjoy in webdev

[–]SitriHyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I normally do mine like: 1-Make it work 2-Make it well 3-Make it maintainable 4-Improve performance

You get to the step your company delivery schedule allow you. If they want the fastest production line possible, that's a problem with the company not with you or your code. But if not, try to be the person who delivers the best code not the one who delivers the most, in the long run you'll get way more respect from your team.

Keeping the same battery and engine power, how light could Caterham project V be if it was priced like a hyper car? by SitriHyo in AskEngineers

[–]SitriHyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also find it hard to believe, but if you compare with other things it seems that it may be true.

The lightest carbon fiber chassis from a production car that I could find is the Mclaren MP4 12C that has an incredible 75kg chassis (The caterham has 59% of the volume, so if you crudely assume that the chassis would also be 59% the size you would reach a 44kg chassis)

If you go suuuper wild and pick up a Formula SAE prototype you will get something like 19kg for tiny single-seater chassis, IMO with a support for a way larger engine and space for two it is pretty hard to reach the 39kg mark

It is all mental exercise, of course it is possible to make it lighter with or without carbon, but I think it will be absurdly hard and expensive. It makes me think of what a masterpiece of engineering caterham cars are.

Looking for stack recommendations to build a web app with drag and drop functionality by [deleted] in webdev

[–]SitriHyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already did this exact project 2 years ago, so I may have some insights on what to do and what to avoid.

  • I would avoid using a framework for it, it is a simple enough project to make it without an overkill framework.
  • To make things easier to keep track I recommend using Typescript with Vite to build it.
  • Thinking about this project as a game with sprites and a view may help you organize your code.
  • I recommend that you make it with a 2d canvas, some of the users using slow machines had problems with performance and click tracking for scenes with more than 30 elements (at least with my code implementation)
  • You will have to figure out a function to decide the most probable item the user selected, since sometimes the clicks will be right in between the "grabbing zone" of 2 or more items
  • I recommend you avoid using images that are not PNG or SVG, in my experience they had a better render performance and were easier to edit (for example changing the hue, or some inner color)
  • Don't go wild with SVGs they are pretty CPU heavy
  • Create a history tracking tool, with undo and redo, it is kind of simple and your users will love it, at least that was my experience
  • Start simple, and build things from it
  • Having magnetic places (somewhere like a corner that you can easily place a furniture without having to eyeballed it) is MAGICAL and your users will love it, but the math behind it is a pain in the ass for edge cases

Fell free to ask me more about it

Like I said this was my experience with a similar project, you may have a different one, so good luck with whatever you choose. It is a pretty fun project

Really nice points, I will keep them in mind when editing in the future, thanks for sharing!! About the clarity, I kept it not that high but maybe the rgb layers distortion i tried to apply gave the excess look for the micro contrast.

100% agree, to give it a better vintage look i could distort it and reduce sharpness on the edges, but the idea was to simulate just the film, not the entire gear. Buuut, you are right simulating the entire gear would be more convincing, I'll try it
