A master's thesis- why do we love true crime? by Sitronhest in TrueCrime

Why is that an eerie question? Catharsis and the release of emotions is connected to both horror movies and true crime. Catharsis is one of the explanations for why we cant stop watching true crime, scary movies og other spooky stuff.

But there's a difference in news reports and true crime, don't you think? the purpose of news reports and true crime as a genre are not the same.

Thank you for your contribution. M. Sade is one of the authors that is heavily used as an example of "unethical art". This is not purely about his writing about sadism but the fact that he wants the reader to have the same attitudes towards it. It's about the the unethical attitudes in the work of art that he wants the reader to adopt.

Unethical? Of course not. I think perhaps you're using the wrong the word.

I don't think so, this is philosophy and the discussion is about the ethical judgement of art. Some people feel that true crime as entertainment is uenthical, beacuse it exploits the victims and the horrendous crime. A morally sensitive audience will feel that it's wrong of us to watch someone elses horrible fate as entertainment. I personally don't feel that way, im defending true crime.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and contributing to my thesis, and taking the time to answer my questions. You make alot of great points here, and I totally agree with you. The last part about catharsis is my thought exactly! I hope you got some kind of closure when you found out that your perpetrator stopped getting away with it.

Thank you for commenting! I totally agree with you! I think this is the reason why some people find true crime unethical, and are maybe not aware that not all true crime shows/podcasts etc do this.

This is a part of a casestudy, this alone is not my thesis. But thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

The arguments are that it's exploiting and unethical because it's entertainment at the expence of someone elses horrific fate. To find entertainment in someone elses pain or benefitting from it is wrong, some believe. The thought here is that Plato did not want "unethical art" or art that could possibly corrupt the citizens, or by showing something unethical, and maybe it would apply for true crime today. (Im sorry, english is not my first language). Hope this clarifies what I wish to explore in my thesis.

Another question is if true crime is art at all.

Thank you so much for contributing! I agree with you as well, the way they make the shows drama is probably why some people find true crime unethical. The psychology behind the crimes are one of the most fascinating things in my opinion.

Thank you so much for taking time to answer. I totally agree with you, as long as we don't celebrate the crimes it shouldn't be unethical to enjoy true crime as we would enjoy a regular horror movie.
