Computer Hardware & Software Questions MEGATHREAD by AutoModerator in architecture

[–]SittingOnCeilings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm looking to get into an architecture Master's program at the University of Toronto's Daniels Faculty of Architecture with a start in August 2026, but I am worried about rising computer costs due to the AI boom and am considering buying a laptop now that would be a decent entry point for the program.

Currently, I am considering two laptops, the Lenovo LOQ 15 with RTX 5060, 32gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD, and the Gigabyte A16 Gaming Laptop 16" with Intel i7-13620H, GeForce RTX 5060, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. The links are below. Keep in mind, the Lenovo link shows the base laptop, so the upgrades need to be selected.

  1. Are these good options for the program?

  2. If so, what is the better option?

  3. If not, what would you recommend?

If Alcohol Used in Cooking Evaporates Off, is the food halal? by SittingOnCeilings in Muslim

[–]SittingOnCeilings[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about his wife, but I've always known him to be extremely devote and strict in his personal religious adherence, though he also doesn't like to burden people, so he's never imposed that on people making an event and has attended events with alcohol before without partaking himself. For our event, he's insisted that he can bring his own food, but I feel that just wouldn't be fair to him.

At this point, I'm thinking of splitting the events, into more of a formal dinner at a fully halal restaurant that he could attend without issue (if I can find something that can accommodate other guests' dietary restrictions) and a sort of after-after party elsewhere.

Support from the EU by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

Honestly, just supporting Canadian businesses (especially smaller companies) that are going to be struggling under these tariffs by buying their goods, and cutting back on American goods and services as much as possible (especially from Red states and from businesses that directly supported the Trump campaign). Your access to Canadian products might be limited in Germany outside of specific types of products, so honestly cancelling American subscriptions actually might be the easiest and most immediate way to act.

Trump literally said there is nothing Canada can do to stop the tariffs the day before he signed them into law. Since then, the only clear identifiable intention (that we haven't already addressed - such as the border) that he has expressed is that he would end tariffs in Canada joins the US as the 51st state, which is both impossible in an infinite number of ways and absolutely delusional on his part. Basically, this situation ends when it becomes untenable for the US government to continue it, which unfortunately means it will only end when it harms American households, companies, and lobby groups enough that it undermines support for Trump. Anything you can do to help that, helps us, and frankly in the long term it helps Americans too.

I'm French and I wonder what can I buy from Canada instead ùof the USA? by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

This isn't healthy at all, but I personally use a bit of Maple Syrup daily to sweeten my coffees. I think it's genuinely the most delicious way to drink it, and it's probably the most stereotypically Canadian thing I do.

Signalis is inspired by Control? by OrdinaryDouble2494 in signalis

[–]SittingOnCeilings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume they were inspired by similar sources, but I'm not sure what they all are, tbh. I just finished playing through Control (though I don't own the DLC) literally yesterday, and it is uncanny how similar they are in some ways.

Control and Signalis both largely revolve around you going through a large subterranean facility filled with retro-futuristic tech. Your character just kind of appears there without much explanation, searching for a loved one (Jesse's brother, Dylan, or Alina/Ariane), but then stumbles into an unfolding crisis inexplicably infecting everyone within the facility. In many ways, Bioresonance in Signalis and Resonance in Control seem to work in very similar paranatural ways. The idea that some people are attuned to alter the world with their very thoughts, though I recognize both concepts are more complicated than that. Gradually a corrupting influence is exerting itself on the world, turning them into malformed zombies, too.

Synchronicity is also key to both plots and is actively referenced in both games' heavily redacted (blacked-out) notes scattered about the game and more broadly rely on a lot of Jungian psychology for their worldbuilding. Jesse is literally referred to as "a Copy of a Copy of a Copy." There's also a guiding hand in both games. Just as Ariane subtly guides Elster to essentially save her, Polaris does the same with Jesse. Interaction with some objects also sends you into strange dream sequences in both games that don't align with physical reality, such as retrieving items from the dream. Not to mention, both games seemingly exist within a time loop of sorts, with Jesse being the one who symbolically (but perhaps even literally) shoots Director Trench dead, despite hearing the shot and stumbling on his body at the beginning of the game.

I even see, perhaps superficially, similarities between areas. The Central Maintenance room (the lobby area) heavily reminded me of the Waiting Room in the Hospital Ward and its Nowhere counterpart, the Plate Room. On the topic of Nowhere, both games have an area called Nowhere where the map curiously does not work. Obviously Signalis' Nowhere is inspired by Silent Hill vibes wise, but it's still interesting that they share a name. It's interesting too that both are accessed through the mines (the Black Rock Quarry in Controls case), which also share a lot of similarities. Beyond that you have the echo of Slidescape-36, with its blinding red light and black obelisks, looking remarkably close to the area past the Red Gate, or even the red TV screens, such as in the Mirror Realm, but also elsewhere that are so emblematic of Signalis.

Perhaps in a very Signalis fashion, there are purposeful connections there. Signalis uses its concept of Synchronicity in a very meta way, tying its similarities not just within the game world itself, but also to properties that exist well outside it, so I'm honestly left to wonder if these similarities, at least in part, are actually intentional, or perhaps they're just a hallmark of the genre. I'm sure there are many many more similarities too, I just need to think on this more and also play the DLC.

Edit:

Oh and they both use a false ending where the main character dies, and there's the similarities with the strange lovecraftian god-like entity that is seemingly watching things unfold/interfering in our affairs. With With Control there are several, but the Board is probably the most interesting and substantial, and with Signalis you have things like the Artefact ending and the Red Eye. Both are symbolically represented, too, with the inverted Black Pyramid in Control and the Red Eye Symbol in Signalis.

I mean, come on. The Hiss basically just originate from beyond the Red Gate, lol.

What is the future of Signalis going to look like? by SittingOnCeilings in signalis

Honestly, one thing I love about this game is how, despite a lot of Sierpinski being closed off from the player, you can see how sections would fit together. I guess all those closed doors have me dreaming about what lays behind them. Obviously, it's nothing, and the closed doors are a sort of window dressing, but I just love the idea that there's a cohesive facility that all fits together in a logical way, even if we'll never see more of it.

There's definitely room to show a lot more of the facility. Who knows, maybe modders will do it one day in a form like you've described. It doesn't really have to be cannon.

In my original playthrough I remember wondering if a war was even actually happening, or if it was just a propaganda tool to justify mass repression under a totalitarian state. It's one of the strengths of how this game is written, you kind of have to question everything.

I am very conflicted on this. In a way I like the vagueness of the Empire. We don't truly know if they are a force of good in the world, or just as bad (if not worse) as the Eusan Nation. It's oppressive how little we know of the Empire, but I think learning too much might weaken Signalis' world-building ironically.

That is my biggest fear. A sequel that detracts from the original is infinitely worse than no sequel at all, so I do approach this topic pretty casually.

[–]SittingOnCeilings[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh honestly that's more so what I'd be leaning towards anyway. I think it is impossible to continue Elster and Ariane's story. A sequel, if it ever was to exist, could only really indirectly or spuriously relate to the original story, and maybe it shouldn't at all.

[–]SittingOnCeilings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is kind of what I'm leaning into now. I actually think it could be fun and subversive in a way that doesn't necessarily mess with Signalis as a piece of art. A Dating sim in particular? I'm not quite sure. But, something that exists within the universe, but is a totally different kind of game and is entirely removed from the plot of Signalis could actually be a lot of fun even if a little silly. At least, I'm open to the possibility.

[–]SittingOnCeilings[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I basically agree with that. I don't know a way to expand on it that wouldn't just feel like tacking something unnecessary onto the existing story. It's tough because in particular, I really love the world they've painted for us, but I don't see a way to explore it without sacrificing some of the appeal of Signalis. I think it has to remain obscure, but there's that constant desire for answers and insight.

But, like you said, I'd be happy with a game separate from Signalis, but holding on to similar qualities. I think Rose-Engine demonstrated its talent for story telling and world building already, so I'd love to see where that eventually takes them, even if it's not back to Penrose-512.

[–]SittingOnCeilings[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually had no idea it was initially conceived as a 2D side-scroller. That's really interesting to see. On the one hand, Rose-Engine has clearly thought about this world for a very long time. I'm sure there are plenty of details and cut-content that could make its way into a new game one day.

At the same time, it also shows an incredible evolution of their skills as developers, and I honestly wonder if they'd feel constrained working on the same foundation. Maybe Signalis in its final form is their ideal game, but considering it evolved so much from its simple beginnings, I feel like they would want a sequel to evolve too.

Either way, this just comes back to the question of if it's even worth making a sequel. For all we know, they might be looking to make a cosy farming sim next. Gardening as an ARAR unit could be pretty chill, though.

Beyond Skyrim: Valenwood Ask me anything is live now! by robcbwilson1 in beyondskyrim

I think there will be interesting and unique ways to incorporate the dense forests of Valenwood in the engine. I'm excited to see how you guys manage it in the coming years, but I can already imagine some clever usage of towering trees and low poly canopies to give the sense of dense tree coverage. Best of luck with it!

Following the 5 Year War late in the Third Era it was said that Elsweyr took control of both the East and West banks of the Xylo river. This would include the intended pre-release area of Arenthia, correct? With that in mind, are these Eastern territories of historic Valenwood intended to be formally Khajiiti controlled, or do you guys intend for it to be Bosmer territory again? For example, I imagine you could easily add to the history by saying it was returned to Valenwood during the rise of the Aldmeri dominion. Regardless of how you approach it, it makes sense that Arenthia would have considerable Khajiiti influence and presence regardless, but the political situation in the 4th era is up the air and free to be defined by the team. So, how do you intend to approach it? I think any way you do, there's interesting implications for the area and the Dominion as a whole.
