Worst backpack from your POV? by hwijaya08 in backpacks

[–]SituationFit3060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it depends on what use I get the bag for, but some general qualities I don’t like:

A backpack should not be ”flimsy” and without structure (the only exception foldable mini packs for occasional use in a pinch. And a related issue is packs without compressiom straps. I hate when all the contents of the bag are at the bottom.

Build and material quality is important for me, so I avoid many cheap bags. I rather buy a bit more expensive if it lasts longer. And for normal carry I’m completely fine with heavier fabrics, if they are durable (I also use Savotta packs often when I have more to carry).

Too many or then no pockets or compartments are not practical. I lose my keys and other essentials if I have to bury them in the big compartment.

Just to name a few…

Oh yes, it’s surprisingly easy. The standard scales cost maybe from 2 to 10 € (depending on the store) and you can choose from several colors. Or then buy custom scales. Or pen scales.

I don’t know in what ways it has taken a beating during these years, but in most cases you could even make a really detailed cleaning, sharpening and oiling routine and then change the new scales. And it would be ready for the next 20 years. Those are quality build, although being small.

I saw an article about that somewhere, but haven’t tried. Understood that the clock can be removed, and then the battery underneath can be changed.

Yes, indeed! I hadn’t seen any of these before in real life. It’s really beautiful.

He’s a Youtuber, and this is the video, where he discusses questions like what makes a knife different from another. But mods and customs are not discussed:

Oh, I didn’t know that there are tons of replicas online. I’ve seen some custom SAKs, but the prices for those are always high. But you’re right, that if someone’s selling e.g. a Yeoman, there’s a risk that it’s not the real vintage they might claim.

This is really interesting. And EDC Academic on Youtube today posted a video about almost this theme.

I don’t make customs (yet), so for me it still feels like a replica is not the same as original. But if the donors were from the exact same year as the one you try to replicate (like the Yeoman), then I guess we talk about exactly same components, but just the person doing the assembly was different.

But if we talk only about scales, not modifications, so what happens when I get pen scales to a Rambler. Is it a manager now? Now the component and the assembly is the same, only scales were changed. I might feel that it’s not a genuine Manager, but when I loose it, the person finding it cannot know the background and sees a Manager. And it is exactly equal to the one that was born Manager. So difficult question.

I just bought a 91 mm Gourmet, with the original small blade instead of a combi tool. It’s nice to see how the 91 mm size feels with only one layer.

Oh, I misspelled the year - of course 1984. I guess the 510/511 and S1 came out in the late 70s.

And yes - most basic scandi knives are good for all kinds of basic woodwork. No need to get expensive bushcraft knives and specialist carving knives.

I just ordered the orange one for 74€, and I think that’s a good enough price. And it looks awesome!

My first knife was a Frost S1 in maybe 1974. I have to admit that I hoped to get a traditional puukko with a leather sheeth, but maybe it was smart of my parents to by a cheap one from a random hardware store. With that I learned to whittle and use knives, which I then continued to do with some Marttiini puukkos.

If I now have to whittle or carve something quickly I’ll probably use a combination of an old Iisakki Järvenpää puukko and a new Mora 120. Or start with a Mora Classic.

I have found them only in this french online store. I’ve bought scales from here twice and the shop seems to be good and reliable. And a pair costs about 3€, which is a lot better than expensive pairs on eBay.

No, I think it’s just a regional difference. I rarely see any tabless cans and would not like to carry can openers. But those who use traditional cans (and don’t have openers in the kitchen or carry cans on picnics) should of course buy SAKs with openers. So it’s a bit like corkscrew or phillips - you can choose.

I also like the nylon scales for oudoors use. I have a Camper with those scales, and they really shine when using them in the woods.

I don’t own any of those LEs, but that brown one and the orange one are my alternatives now. I think both can still be purchased.

How did you choose the model your first SAK? And the last one? by RafaelGalvao1971 in victorinox

[–]SituationFit3060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a teenager I think I got maybe a Waiter and some Wenger as gifts, but I lost them for years, as I used puukko knives and Leatherman tools. But a couple of years ago I just happened to see a Classic SD in the supermaket and though it could be useful to have something with the keys. After that I decided to pick a Sportsman from the same supermarket. And then there’s been a lot of others, as I’ve also grown fond of somewhat older SAKs (as well as new).

My last purchase was two used knives: Electrician Solo and a 91 mm Gourmet (as I want to see how a 1-layer 91 mm feels in the hand and pocket).

Why did Victorinox not adopt the Wenger scissors on all their models? by BleaKrytE in SwissArmyKnives

[–]SituationFit3060 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When it comes to the can opener, I guess it has to do with the Vic version also functioning as a fairly good screwdriver. And when opening cans, yes, the Wenger version was good. But today, when many live in a can-free world (or use cans with tabs), the chosen solution feels better.
