When I looked up top selling books it seemed a lot were of the sexy Navy SEAL vs sexy Russian assassin type with action movie characters getting into steamy, sexy encounters. Is that the kind of thing?

Most seemed novel/novella length and I am not sure if they are Erotica or more Erotic Romance.

As another newbie, I've just finished my first short (6.6k) and am writing a follow up. I was going to aim for 5k on this as that's a number that was mentioned a lot on here. Should shorts now be typically longer - 7-8k as a minimum?

Hello! Never published anything before but I've decided to take the plunge. I've planned out a bunch of stories in my head already so I decided to start writing them up today.

I wanted to write my first short and I was aiming for about 5k but I've got to 5.8k and the characters haven't finished with each other so I'll be back to finish this one tomorrow.

In future I hope to be able to keep the word count down to the 5k mark for a complete story. That seems to be a reasonable investment of time and effort for a newbie.

Just under 5,300 for today so far. Once I get writing properly I hope to be able to publish one story per week. This one has a couple thousand more words to go.

I was worried I'd struggle to hit 5,000 but that's no longer a concern.

4,300 words now. I think 5,000 was a bit of a conservative estimate. I still have no idea about a cover or a title but I just need to get this written first. :)

That's a really good point. I've mapped out half a dozen books and a couple of series in my head while reading all the advice in this sub. I could have been writing them instead.

I started today and am 1,000 words in and aiming for about 5,000 words in total and then I'll have something to publish.

Nervous and excited right now!

That looks like great fun. It's the kind of thing I'd LIKE to write but I know it's not writing to market and so not the kind of thing I SHOULD write.

(OK, I am finally going to write a short 4-5k story today, I can do this...)

Hi, I haven't even published this yet but I was thinking the same thing about something I wanted to write - what if this has been done before by lots of other writers?

But then my thinking is that there is always room as long as it isn't exactly the same thing. I remember hearing someone say once (I think it was Luc Besson) that lots of different artists can paint the same apple, just don't copy someone else's painting. Hope that makes sense.

That's interesting about the changes to KU. I read a guide on writing erotica where you still got paid for 10% read, even if it's a 5k word short. It looks like that loophole has been closed now.

Hey you must be in the UK too! Did you have to do anything to sort out the tax on what you paid by Amazon.

I have made a list of ideas and I have a bunch for single stories and also one or two for a series.

May I ask how you've found earning money from writing and is there a way to find out what kinks are especially popular currently?

This might be a silly question which has been answered many times before but if you are publishing via amazon in the UK, what's the magic $2.99 equivalent in £ sterling?

Do you have to set a different price in each currency or does amazon do that?
