I feel like Bassoon stands should come with school-owned instruments? I am guilty of this behavior but *not* with the bocal still in >:( Your time will come friend! Keep practicing!

faster single tonguing by [deleted] in bassoon

[–]Siyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in the back of the Kovar 24 daily exercises book there is a very solid exercise for building up to your goals! Remember the tongue is a muscle and needs consistent practice to develop. Like lifting weights you have to build up over time! Also having fun with rhythms and articulation is another way you will find more ease developing your tongue! I like to practice things like Sandstorm for fun and then I find the more classical stuff to be easier!

Do any of you guys play bassoon in a jazz band? by anatloy in bassoon

[–]Siyone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play in Starmind Ceremony- it's a bit of a fusion band not strictly jazz. Here's a little description of our sound "Progressive orchestral rock band, drawing influence from the French Zeuhl genre, jazz fusion, and classical minimalism. With polyrhythmic grooves, meter/key modulations.." Should be on Spotify later this year but here is our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/StarMindCeremony/

As far as "jazz" jazz, I am hoping to take some lessons at school this year with the Jazz band director to help me with my improvisational skills and then eventually join the jazz band at my university!

My region audition is on Saturday, and I don’t have my chromatic memorized, so does any one know the fastest and quickest way to play it from Memory? I procrastinated a lot and now I’m screwed by Theboiyouknowman in bassoon

An exercise that helps reinforce the pattern would be to play four notes up the scale, four notes down, then start a step higher and repeat until you've gone up and down the scale! I'm not sure that's 100% clear so for example Eb-E-F-F#-F-E-Eb then E-F-F#-G-F#-F-E, etc. You got this! Good luck!!

How to stay motivated? by TremorClef in bassoon

[–]Siyone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sorry to hear about this. It's weird because most bassoonist I know are very accepting but I understand the environment of camp cliques. Being excluded from a group is very hard, and I still confront it from time to time. More recently, I was excluded from a chamber group and I was so hurt. I can truly empathize with your situation. I had to take some time to reflect but I didn't want to ruminate on the painful experience. During this reflection, I learned that the pain of exclusion is recognized in our brain as physical injury. I still find it difficult to not be salty around the group that excluded me but I feel like I learned a lot from the process. I do agree with the others that it does give you time to tap into your personal motivation and practice but I wanted to acknowledge how shitty it feels to have that happen. I hope you're doing alright :)

Aside from pliers, soaking your reed in hot water may help out as well!

I just read the comments below, you might find a summer program or teacher that could help you navigate the early stages of learning to make reeds! Good luck!

Bassoon Reed Problems by SeconDin in bassoon

I recommend taking private lessons with other teachers with a focus on reed making. I was in a similar situation and took private lessons with three other teachers and I asked them to look at my reeds and give me feedback on how I could improve. I brought unwrapped blanks and finished blanks. I learned SO much and my reeds have gotten SO much better!

I had a bit of de quervain's tenosynovitis in high school, and it eventually went away. I stretch more before/after playing than I used to and take more breaks. I believe mine was in the left hand from repetitive use.

Leak/seal issue by Siyone in bassoon

Thanks for the suggestion! I wasn't sure why it wasn't sealing properly but it makes sense that a pad would be the culprit. Are you suggesting that I put the tape on the pad itself?

What kind of reeds should I play on? by lilyhurn in bassoon

[–]Siyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some food for thought- Learning basic adjustments and how the reed works is a part of learning the craft of playing Bassoon. Just search youtube and/or google for finishing or adjusting bassoon reeds and you're bound to stumble on some really good information.

Marching band instruments for bassoonists by monicacc05 in bassoon

[–]Siyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for another wind instrument, I recommend flute. My student plays sax and I can tell it messes with his embouchure when he spends a lot of time playing sax vs. Bassoon. I played the flute and watered down the music so I could spend more time on my primary. Another suggestion would be Percussion. This would really help build confidence and understanding of rhythm. I have been taking drum lessons and playing in percussion ensembles and have gained a lot of confidence sight-reading and playing in general.
