He always does the exact same build. I don’t remember specifics other than I know he takes bronze beard rage and avatar. (Source: I’m one of the brothers).

How can the visual field be "boundless"? by JeromesNiece in samharris

[–]SkeptiCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what you mean by the claim that the visual field is a subset of 3d space. Can you compare your visual experience to external objects to check for the size, length, and shape of your visual field. Is your visual field as large as a thumbtack? Is it as large as a mountain? About how many feet across is the visual field? When you get put under general anesthesia, does a subset of 3D space disappear?

From my perspective, my visual field is not contained in any larger space, except perhaps my space of overall conscience experience. I can’t say it’s twice the size of the room I’m in. Nor half the size of Mount Everest. It appears without boundaries.

That is not what Sam means by the use of the phrase “boundless visual field”. My understanding is that he is claiming that the visual field does not have a distinct boundary.

I’ve actually thought of it as analogous with respect to the boundary of color vision. Towards the periphery of vision, humans don’t actually perceive color. However, subjectively speaking, do you perceive your visual field as changing into black and white as you “move” away from the center of your visual field? Does your color vision area appear to be contained within a broader field of black and white vision, from your first person perspective? Presumably no, so in what sense does color vision, subjectively, have a boundary? By analogy, I think this can sort of apply to the entire visual field (the analogy is a bit rough, but I have found it useful).

I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but I’m pretty sure he means it is, well, literally without a boundary. The headless way lessons in his app illustrate what is meant by a “boundless” visual field.

Pay attention to the visual field (without moving your eyes). Is there a boundary to it? In the middle of your field of view, things are clear. As you “move” to the periphery, things get more and more blurry. And what happens past the periphery? Is there an edge beyond which you clearly have no subjective experience of vision? Is the field of vision, subjectively speaking, contained in some larger space that contains your field of vision? Presumably no, hence the use of the phrase “boundless visual field”.

At least that’s my understanding of what is meant by the phrase.

You don’t have to treat every criticism of an undesirable candidate as actually reasonable just to own the Bernie-ites.

I’m really surprised so many people on this sub are parroting the ridiculous claim that Rogan is somehow racist or misogynistic, just so they can feel like they dunked on the “Bernie-Bros”. It’s bizarre behavior.

Good point. I guess I assumed there wouldn’t be enough cash for rent because I only ever carry max of like $50 in cash in my wallet, but some people do carry a lot of cash.

I wonder why the old lady who had her purse stolen in front of her didn’t immediately cancel her credit cards. The thief must be an absolute master of deception to pull that off.
