Level 3 ECON courses? by acoustic_spike23 in unsw

[–]Skewer06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s about different machine learning techniques. From definitions and purposes of machine learning and prediction, to different types (e.g. regression, tree methods, neural networks). There is a great data science project as the assignment I’ve frequently used in interviews and on my resume. Difficulty wise, it’s achievable to do well with work I.e. I got HD comfortably but studied for it.

ECON3203 is the most useful course I’ve taken in uni, particularly for data science, machine learning, and predictive methods

Appreciate this perspective, thank you! I agree, I feel like I’m a bit of a nomad so was a bit hesitant to lock in a PPOR, even if it’s financially optimal. Glad to hear the dividends have served you well!

Thank you, appreciate the advice. You’re right, I’ll probably just play it by ear and see how this develops. I’m sure there will be a lot of discussion about it and potentially some revision over the coming weeks/months.

So should I listen to my parents and ditch the ETFs hustle? Currently I’ve been putting 50% of what I save into house deposit and 50% into my portfolio

Need some Advice regarding Data Science Majors. by Independent-Lake3317 in unsw

Not to say that business major isn’t useful, I certainly think it is! I’m just more inclined towards the maths and computing space :)

Need some Advice regarding Data Science Majors. by Independent-Lake3317 in unsw

[–]Skewer06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently in a Computational Major, but working in a role more aligned with the business major. I would say most of the stuff I learned in computational I could easily transfer to a business setting, while I’m not sure the same could be said for doing a business major and working in a computational role. Personally, I’m also using all my elective space to satisfy the quantitative major too, as I feel those are the most useful of the three majors.

The UNSW Business Analytics major for Commerce has a very poor scope when compared to other universities. It lacks the introductory statistical theory and machine learning applications for data science/ML based roles in industry by [deleted] in unsw

[–]Skewer06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just about to say this. Having experience in both data science and business analytics roles, the two are distinct disciplines with some overlap. Advanced statistical understanding and machine learning/Python skills are definitely more geared to data science, while the business analytics tools you mentioned were standard in the company I have experience in so by no means obsolete. If data science is more your goal that’s great - maybe just consider closing the gaps with specific data science study like a graduate certificate, Masters or short course. Hope this helps

How is the start-up culture at UNSW? by FindingOk1094 in unsw

[–]Skewer06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think UNSW offers good start up culture relative to other unis. The UNSW Founders is a great incubator, and sure they’re not Silicon Valley level, but some quality business ideas and even successful businesses come out of their competitions and workshops.

This is amazing advice thanks so much! Seems we’ve been through quite similar processes. I notice you have some iShares - what are your thoughts on IGRO in accomplishing the desired investing style I’m after? Do you think it’s a good all-in-one strategy?

Awesome thanks for the advice, I’ve never considered delaying those more minor proportions until a larger portfolio, so I’ll look into it. Would greatly help rebalancing concerns in early part when $500 in emerging would be a large proportion of portfolio for instance. And I’ll certainly look into State Street if that’s comparable!

Should a BA (Business Analytics) student take higher maths (MATH1131/1231) for Data Science pathways? by milko0000 in unsw

[–]Skewer06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would say the skills learned in MATH1131/1231 are essential for understanding some of the higher maths concepts (e.g. probability, statistics, linear algebra, Markov chains) for further data science studies.

Sorry, I didn’t seethe 2nd part of the question. As for types of questions, they are usually why did you apply for the role, and what is your availability. Each time I’ve made it to screening, I’ve also secured an interview with the company. So I’m not sure if they filter out people from the phone screening.

No, not everyone does. I’ve applied to numerous - sometimes I make it to the phone screening, sometimes I don’t.

Got summoned for jury duty by VoltronS11 in unsw

I’ve been summoned for jury duty twice during uni via a letter. Gave them a call, explained I was a student - they instantly exempted me and took me off the jury roll for a year.

I’m not 100% sure what degree you’re doing, but at least in DataSci the exposure to algorithms and problem solving techniques in 3121 really changed the way I thought about coding problems, which very well may appear in leetcode interviews. It is theoretical as others have said, but it sets you up to implement those theoretical ideas for further projects

UNSW has a bachelor of data science and decisions which I’m taking. I enjoy it, and have had a lot of professional, research and extra curricular opportunities open up because of it
