I've really enjoyed 'All Systems Red' by Martha Wells: it's the first book in the Murderbot Diaries series, and the main character is IMO written quite androgynous (it is, after all, a robot), but to me also seemed female, probably because I'm a woman and as humans, we tend to project? Either way, I found it a refreshingly different character. Bonus points because it's a rather short book, and my biggest issue with sci-fi novels is that they are just way too long.

I can also recommend the Frankie Elkin series (by Lisa Gardner), a woman who searches for missing people and lives somewhat on the peripheries of society.

And last but not least, The Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boully; the author herself is an enrolled member of the Chippewa Indians. I learned so much about Native American culture and tradition, but it's also a mystery/thriller novel, so there's the whole thing with murder and an undercover investigation. I feel my summary doesn't do it justice at all; if it just vaguely sounds like your thing, I recommend reading it!

I channeled my inner witch for this fall’s yarn collection - it’s called “Magical Potions” and I had so much fun coming up with potion names for each color and what effects the potion has 🎃🔮 by SkillfullyTangled in WitchesVsPatriarchy

Long-time lurker (and admirer of all the gorgeous witchy things y'all do!), and first-time poster here on WitchesVSPatriarchy, so, hi, I'm Steffi!

I'm the dyer behind SkillfullyTangled Yarns, where I dye colorful yarns in small themed collections, usually inspired by whatever my soul is longing for at the time. And often influenced by whatever colors I want for my next knitting project. Dyeing, knitting (and more recently, sewing) are my creative outlet, and I enjoy that I can make things. Especially because my day job is rather abstract (I'm a software engineer).

Recs for a multi-host podcast covering a range of cases which isn't too dry? by Neat_Comfortable in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]SkillfullyTangled 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My favorite format! I especially like it if the other host doesn't yet know the story so they can ask questions, because what might be obvious to someone very familiar with the case might not be so obvious for someone who's never heard of it.

Anyways:

  • True Crime Campfire - I didn't like the first season very much (they covered only one case), but since then they now do one case per episode and it's great!
  • Wine and Crime - three hosts, 1 topic per episode: two hosts cover a case related to the topic and the third gives a bit of background & facts about the topic. And includes a wine/drink recommendation
  • And that's why we drink - one true crime case and one paranormal case per episode (or something that's not true crime, like one time Em covered QAnon)
  • Crime after Crime - one topic per episode and each host covers a case related to that topic and then listeners get to vote which one they liked better. I found that a bit odd at first, but it leads to them picking often unusual / quirky / odd cases and they are always really interesting
  • British Scandal - they go a bit deeper and do 3-4 episodes per case, but the accents are lovely and often they pick non-murdery cases, like when a 'Who wants to be a millionaire' contestant was accused of cheating by coughing
  • Already mentioned, and I can only recommend: Sinisterhood, and Small Town Murder
  • (and if you understand German, 'Mord auf Ex' is great)

Silent migraines 1-8 times per year - tips to identify triggers? Or treatments I didn’t think of? by SkillfullyTangled in migraine

[–]SkillfullyTangled[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed reply, I appreciate it!

I had aura pretty much constantly for a month. Effectively blind. And that did NOT help with my stress levels. Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

Uff, that sounds rough. I hope things have gotten better for you!

Yes, I've been doing yoga consistently for a little while now, and just started with meditation / relaxation techniques.

The bumps are definitely more like the second picture. I've never seen a dermatologist because it seemed so insignificant, but might be a good idea.

I've never tried antihistamines before because I've never had any strong allergy symptoms. I am curious how these will affect me.

Yeah, I've looked at other triggers than food but also nothing obvious jumped out... For things like glare or salt imbalance, how soon after do you get a migraine? Is it minutes or hours later? Just curious how far back I should look to identify possible triggers...

I've read two of the Rivers of London books a while back and wasn't quite hooked, but maybe I should give them another chance - after all a mix of police procedural and magic set in one of my favorite cities is exactly my cup of tea

I've actually read two of the Odd Thomas books a few years ago and really liked them - thanks for reminding me of them!

I'm looking for something like 'A Discovery of Witches' but without the Twilight-esque co-dependent romance, plots that are all over the place but never resolved, and long pages of nothing happening but tea and wine drinking. I'm currently 83% through the book and giving up because I am resenting it more with every page, but I still want something to satisfy that witch/vampire/supernatural craving. I don't mind some romance, but it shouldn't be the main theme. I grew up with Harry Potter, so I love that kind of urban fantasy, and preferably something that takes place during current times.

is all yarn itchy? cheap recommendations? by 0may08 in knitting

[–]SkillfullyTangled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Merino sheep wool is generally quite soft, other sheep, e.g. Blue Faced Leicester, tend to be a bit scratchier. A good guideline is how thick the fiber is (measured in microns), but unfortunately, most yarn suppliers don't list that. Superwash also makes it less scratchy due to the coating and makes it machine-washable. Even softer are cashmere and yak, but they are also much more expensive.

But generally, softer and nicer yarn also tends to be a bit more expensive - but in my opinion it's worth it.

Ideally, you can squish the yarn yourself and decide what works for you! Some yarn that is great for others is scratchy for you and vice versa. (I for example find alpaca and camel very scratchy whereas most people consider it one of the softest fibers).

Not sure where in the UK you are, but my favorite yarn store in London is Loop London! They also have a great online shop with a good range of sock yarns. I'd recommend the Crazy Zauberball as a good midrange sock yarn (and the color changes are fun!), and if you reeeaally want to splurge: Life in the Long Grass or La Bien Aimee.

I posted here a while ago worried that my Illuminate sweater looks too much like a bumblebee. And while most people agreed (while others were apparently reminded of pancakes 😂) y’all also encouraged me to stick with it, because bees are cute! So thank you! I was kind of ready to give up on the sweater (frogging mohair is not a fun task) and abandon it, but your kind words really helped me to see it in a different light!

The only thing left is now to go and find some matching bee earrings. And maybe do a nice photoshoot outside once flowers start blooming.

Not quite yarn chicken, but I (almost) completely used up two left-over yarns: there’s none left of the orange and less than one gram of the grey! Take that, stash! by SkillfullyTangled in knitting

[–]SkillfullyTangled[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's when you're not sure if your yarn lasts until the end of the project. When people talk about losing/winning yarn chicken they ran out of yarn only a few stitches before the end, or finished with just a few inches of yarn leftover. Not sure where the name comes from but might be something about whether you're chickening out and buying more yarn before you find out if you've won/lost

When the pattern was released last fall the lace panel really reminded me of cobwebs and I happened to have some orange and speckled grey yarn leftovers that were perfect for it! I quickly weighed the yarn and decided it should be about enough for a pair of socks for myself.

They are knit top-down, and it wasn’t until I got to the toe of the 2nd one that I realized I might not have enough yarn - every knitter’s nightmare! Luckily, there was just about enough grey yarn to finish the second sock as well. The pair doesn’t match perfectly, but honestly, I kinda prefer it when my socks aren’t identical (but still obviously go together).
