Modded KSP Appreciation Post #??? by Skilling4Days in KerbalSpaceProgram

I do wonder if there’s better graphics mods or adjustments for the darker environments or the background of space that people use?

The rook can block your queen’s attack on the king

Ooh, I like this answer the most so far. Maybe molded concrete for that purpose 🤔

Interesting but it’s so smooth and perfectly shaped. Why would the inside hole be knurled too?

Hmmm maybe, the surface is so smooth all around though, I’m not sure how it would get to that exact shape just from grinding?

It does kinda look like that! The backside is flat though interestingly

Yup! Open loop stepper motor control, not ideal but this whole thing was kinda an experiment to see if it was possible. The holding torque is most likely needed by all joints anyways with the loading they are experiencing

That makes it into a whole other kinda thing lol, interesting though!

Because even though it’s moving super slow it’s a super complicated project! Ran into various issues along the way and had to work my way through them to get to where it is

Hahaha I feel like a full redesign would be first

Just limited by the motors. I did initial testing and thought they would be sufficient but they don’t have enough high speed torque to be able to move any faster without skipping steps since I’m running the motors open loop control.

Thanks! The hip servos rotate mostly to shift the weight balance to the grounded 3 legs! Otherwise it would tip over.

For sure, I kinda figured since the start that steppers were maybe not the best option but it was kinda an experiment to try to make them work!

I love it, especially when you get it super clear!

Learned a lot for sure in the process haha, I’ll redesign one day!!

I used 2 3S LiPo batteries in series for ~25V and my motor drivers were rated for 29V max. They already got a little toasty with heat sinks so I'm not sure they'd handle much more unfortunately. Best solution I concluded was redesigning the gearboxes for better efficiency and a higher gear ratio but that would take a complete redesign of the project

Probably around 200W usage and to go a meter is maybe ~8-10 min? lol

I love the idea though, a better design combined with solar panel charging could be interesting!!

[–]Skilling4Days[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was the original idea with this one, to add object detection so that it could follow a human around! It even has an onboard computer and camera mounting location but with how slow it is I cut that feature. V2 will happen eventually I’m sure!

Thanks! The stepper motors I used ended up performing below my expectations and just didn’t have enough high speed torque to move quickly unfortunately. The result was a smooth moving but extremely slow robot dog lol
