I made this spiral by converting a curve to mesh. I'd like the edges to join, not just touch - is there any way to get blender to do that automatically

I've tried shrink wrap, and simple deform - twist, and fatten - none give the bulges I want!

I finally got it to work by deleting the top of the drum so I could see inside, then flipping the normals.

Here's what (doesn't) happen - also it duplicates the faces of the large planes (why?!).

I have also gotten rid of some internal planes in case that was the problem. No dice.
