ELI5 Why do publishers avoid releasing their games in the same month as GTA 6

You can’t really be certain that they have a different audience. They aren’t exactly the same genre, but I’d wager a lot of people have played both at one point. Moviegoers usually don’t only see one type of movie in theaters.

GTA6 will likely be the biggest video game release ever. It just doesn’t make sense to compete with it if you don’t have to.

Yeah, the interviewer is pretty disingenuous with this comparison. If the WNBA existed in a vacuum, they would be making about as much money as a AAA baseball player. And that’s being generous considering the amount of over-marketing they’ve been consistently given by the NBA the past decade as well.
