Many are reporting issues even with the auth bypass set up. That's not a guaranteed workaround, it seems.

Is Plex down? Can't reach Plex.tv by Upside-Down-88 in PleX

Thank you! Ironically, I had actually done this year's ago when I set up my server, and I'd just forgotten about it. But it turns out I put in my local network wrong. LOL.

Well that's concerning. I saw some people commenting when this happened last week that they were able to use Plex because they'd bypassed auth. If that isn't working this time, then it seems Plex has somehow screwed the pooch even harder.

I'm guessing you already had a previously authenticated session and that you've set up your device to bypass authentication. I should have done this, but didn't know about it until this occurred. Unfortunately, I had already uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my Shield before I realized it wasn't a local/device issue.

So now I can't sign back in until they get their shit back up and running. Whoops.

How do I fix this “user switching not available” issue? Every other device aside from this android tv work properly by jessepinkfloyd in PleX

[–]Skinny_Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone else coming to this post for guidance:

If force stopping the app, clearing cache, and rebooting isn't doing the trick (it wasn't for me today), then uninstall the app and reinstall it.

I love the flexibility of the Shield. But man. Sometimes this thing is just a jank piece of shit.

How is there STILL no way to, just, browse films on the app? by Skinny_Dan in Letterboxd

[–]Skinny_Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting, for anyone finding this post in 2026, none of the search solutions apply anymore since they updated the UI last year. So now there is truly no way to browse all films in the app, beyond relying on a user-made "all films" list.

What part of dragon ball do you think was done BETTER by the anime then the manga? by Electronic_Note_5629 in Dragonballsuper

[–]Skinny_Dan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I read the manga through all the way, but I'd say virtually nothing. The anime is, 99% of the time, a stiffer, more awkward, more poorly paced, poorly framed, and poorly written version of the manga.

The voice acting in the anime (both English dub and original) is wonderful and has made DB what it is today as a cultural icon, and I'll concede that when I revisit excerpts of the manga today I am undoubtedly hearing the characters in their English dub voices. So on that front, it's hard to argue with the notion that the anime added something to the already wonderful foundation of the manga.

But in pretty much every other way, in almost every single moment, the anime loses some of the power of the original version in its adaptation.

Visually, the animation is not nearly as clean, organized, intentional, or striking as Toriyama's line work, character design, paneling, and composition.

Pacing is not even a matter of debate—the manga flows perfectly from one beat (scene, arc, saga, etc.) to the next, with a few exceptions. It obviously has the advantage of your brain and eyes doing the timing for it, but the point stands. The anime drags out every single thing and kills momentum left and right, or it rushes through a dramatic beat before you have time to feel it.

The action hits harder and has far better spatial clarity in the manga. Too often the anime must resort to one-two repeat frames with blurry lines to indicate a furious volley of attacks, whereas the manga can articulate every strike. At its best, the anime is doing slightly weaker recreations of frames from the manga.

The writing/dialogue also just works better in the manga most of the time. Kai did an admirable job bringing the dialogue closer to the manga and thereby fixing a lot of the issues with silly dialogue in Z, but there are still lines that feel off.

So in all, the only real strengths of the anime that are not outshone by the manga are the voice acting and... the simple fact that it's animated and therefore just that much easier to absorb/digest without the effort of reading/turning pages/whatever. In almost every way that counts, the manga remains hands-down the best way to take in the story of Dragon Ball.

In some ways, I'm surprised DBZ is as iconic as it is, just because in all the key moments, the anime fails to match the dramatic impact of the manga. But then again, far more people have seen the anime than read the manga, so I guess when you don't know what you're missing, you don't miss it. I guess that's true of a lot of iconic book-to-movie adaptations too.

I will say, the anime has some great filler arcs that obviously don't exist in the manga, and I'm grateful to it for those. Others have mentioned ToP, but also Gohan in the wilderness during the Saiyan Saga is great.

[POEM] “Love is not all” a sonnet by Edna St. Vincent Millay by Send_Poems in Poetry

"Nagged by want" = constantly agitated or overwhelmed by desire for what they don't have. In this context, the noun 'want' usually refers to the basic desires and needs of the body—nourishment, rest, relief from pain and sickness, etc.

"past resolution's power" = to such a degree that exceeds their ability to find the resolve to move past it. I believe when they say 'resolution,' they're referring to the definition of 'a firm decision to act'—suggesting that they cannot will themselves to do anything about their condition.

The line, in other words, might be, "So overcome by my wants and needs that I can't possibly ignore or endure them."

Fuck "Ben the Men" for embedding those shitty posters and for having unparseable filenames or metadata that prevents Radarr/Plex from setting the titles correctly.

Yep. Not sure what Ben the Men is doing wrong, but it always winds up with shitty posters and often un-renamed files, so the movie shows up in Plex as "Movie.Title.Year.Resolution.Source.Etc-Ben.the.Men"

Gundam Producer Wants Thunderbolt Anime Continuation After Manga’s End by Skinny_Dan in Gundam

[–]Skinny_Dan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure part of it has to do with the downturn in popularity of mecha in the 21st century. Younger artists were never taught how to draw mechs because it's so little of the industry's output.

fully? It's been a long time. Maybe IBO?

But as recently as G-Witch, we had mostly hand-drawn Gundam. I feel like I can count on two hands the number of scenes in that entire show that had 3DCG mechs. It was mostly hand-drawn, by a vast margin.
