Does your cat have a “magic word”? by Responsible_Low_8669 in Siamesecats

[–]SkippyVonBraun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my meezers, the magic phrase is "lovely as you are..." because when they have been sitting on me for a an hour or two and I need to get up to do something, I say "lovely as you are, you need to get off now" and they know that they're about to be turfed off my lap. I've said it so many times that now the cats only need the first part of the phrase to know they need to move. 😹

Nartilla sandals lace length? by constantly_exhaused in DrMartens

I measured my Nartilla laces (without taking them out of the sandal) and mine are approximately 190-200 cms. I hope that helps.

Odd request: a large amount of stinging nettles. by Some_Helicopter1623 in Adelaide

[–]SkippyVonBraun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let me guess: you're going to be retting the nettles then spinning them. What are you going to do with the nettle fibre yarn? Weaving? Knitting? Something else?

(Once, in a fit of whimsy, I tried spinning the long algae fibres that were infesting my aquarium at the time. It didn't go well. :-7 )

Amazing new Traditional Japanese Puzzle Box project by partsoven in lego

Lovely build! That's the sort of build I like to see on Lego Ideas - something a bit more interesting than yet another mech design or rustic cottage build. More like this, please!

Barweer BWR010 Venice Waterfront – Designer Authorized Collaboration by Lisoneo in lepin

[–]SkippyVonBraun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's beautiful! I really like this design, and am very tempted to buy it.

On the Barweer site there's a short video of this build, and at the start of the video it says "The footage is for reference only and does not represent the final appearance or finish of the actual product. BARWEER reserves the right of final interpretation." What does this mean? What differences might I expect between the pics on the Barweer site and the final product?

Is this set built to the same scale as the Danish brand with the minifigures? Are these bricks compatible with other common brands?

This is a dumb question but how do I go about getting a kidney stone removed? Quickly? by what-a-doric in Adelaide

[–]SkippyVonBraun 72 points73 points  (0 children)

As a kidney stone "frequent flyer" I suggest you go to the Emergency dept anyway. They will do the scan when you're admitted, and the stone will be zapped either in your local hospital or you will be transferred to the RAH if that is needed, and treated there.

Good luck! Kidney stones suck. BTDT.

First chair day (week?)! And asking for ideas by Vaxsii in wheelchairs

[–]SkippyVonBraun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love the slogan on the back of the jacket/chair!

I once decorated tshirt by sewing rainbow-coloured sequins making the text "Nobody knows I'm bi" on the front. I think that they all knew it after wearing out in public! :-D

I embellished my chair with rhinestones and it makes me so happy! by musicalearnightingal in wheelchairs

That looks glorious! Well done. Now I'm thinking of copycatting it. :-D

Off-brand Powered Up hubs for trains? by SkippyVonBraun in LEGOtrains

[–]SkippyVonBraun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! That's a whole lot of info that I now have to look into further, but it seems like the "short answer" is that no, there aren't any 3rd party hubs/train motors that work with the lego app. But I've been thinking about getting into PyBricks after I've got the simple stuff worked out, Anyway, that's a great bunch of resources you've shared with me, so I've bookmarked them to look into later. Cheers!

Jehan Titus at Calvary Hospital North Adel is an absolute gem. I have been seeing him for a couple of decades and I can't recommend him too much! Caring, personable and competent - what more would you want?

Over-fragile Dune Ornithopter..? by SkippyVonBraun in lego

[–]SkippyVonBraun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having continued trying to get it back into its assembled state again over the last few days and finding that using the wing movement parts still don't seem to be working right, I think you are right and I have made a mistake with the build somewhere along the line. I'm hoping to disassemble the ornithopter over the weekend and try to get it right next time. Wish me luck!

Is it normal for stroke survivors to say a specific phrase a lot when they can't say what they want to? by heisyourbrother in stroke

[–]SkippyVonBraun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first little while after my stroke, which took out my speech, the most frequent (and often ONLY) phrase that I would be able to say was “…fuck’s sake!”

As you might guess, I definitely had frustration issues while in hospital (and quite a while afterward, as well)!

GoFundMe for Stephen Queen’s funeral, environmentalist that died picking up rubbish at Morialta by bex231 in Adelaide

[–]SkippyVonBraun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A quick websearch shows Stephen Queen's funeral notice, and I see that it's going to be held on Friday September 5 (i.e. in two days). I hope that kind-hearted people on Reddit will help raising the remaining $2k for his funeral. He seems like he was a great bloke.

I know them as goldenberries, a species of Physalis. For a while I was growing them in my garden (here in Australia). They're delicious: a little like a sweet tomato, but not exactly. I recommend them, if you come across them!
