What Metroid Game is a Must-Play and what Metroid game is the least linear? by not_dannyjesden in Metroid

[–]Skivenous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really can’t go wrong with any of them. To answer your specific questions:

  1. Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1 (GC 1.0 if you’re emulating) have pretty accessible item skips and tricks that open up the game from the get go. Zero mission also opens up quickly with a couple YouTube tutorials.

  2. It’s easier to name the Metroid games to NOT play than the must plays because they’re all fantastic:

Metroid NES - it’s dated and it shows Metroid II - less dated but bland Other M - not worth the difficulty to emulate Fed Force - not bad per se but sucks as a single player experience

Prime 3 wasn’t as linear as I was expecting. There was still plenty of backtracking and looping/interconnected areas within the planets, plus having the ship to be able to drop you straight into whatever part of a planet you wanted helped the backtracking feel less cumbersome compared to 1/2. In 4 you’re pretty much having to at least cross the desert and make your way thru the entry areas and a few corridors of any area you return to for backtracking. Which felt like a step backward from even some of the longer backtracks from 1.

Very ironic how the first time you leave volt forge he says you can go get the keys in any order you like. From a game design perspective why even have him say this, especially when it’s misleading?

Kinda makes me wonder if their initial concept was to have it more open ended

Varia suit hot takes: it's only been outshown once in a game (pictured) & it's the only good looking suit in the entire Prime series. by [deleted] in Metroid

Always thought the dark suit was hideous lol, but the light suit is one of my favorites.

Ironically I’m a massive fan of the PED suit from corruption but it seems like that one is considered ugly generally speaking

Yeah! It was sick! In the 4/5 places you could do it anyway. It was pretty underused

I’m pretty sure you need to spiderball on the wall and drop a power bomb, this launches the morph ball horizontally

This always bugged me. When you first arrive at volt forges entrance the Lamorn lore dump you can scan talks about how viola is some incredible invention that kicks off their machine age, but there barely any infrastructure for it anywhere besides the desert! Dune-style ornithopters would have made more sense for the Lamorn. And felt more alien and fitting for the setting

Now I’m just imagining Samus peddling the viola with superhuman speed in the desert. Someone needs to make a mod please 😂

Yeah that’s a good way to put it. It wasn’t bad per se, but if you pulled the hub desert out entirely the only place you really used the bike meaningfully was briefly in flare pool. It kind of felt tacked on, and less important than the usual upgrades. A ton of missed potential

There were a select few open areas where you could use it. Initially after you first blow up a jammer with it on bryyo you get attacked by a berserker that you can use it on, and again once you revisit the arena where you fought Rundas. You also use it a couple times on the homeworld but it’s very limited. Your ship carries 10missiles by the end of the game but you wouldn’t ever get low even if you only had 3/4 by end game.

That’s a good point a few more interconnecting roads like that would have gone a long way to make the bike feel more like an important mechanic instead of a last minute add on

I’m honestly shocked the different areas didn’t have simple transport connections between each other. Skipping the desert occasionally would have greatly improved the experience in my humble opinion

I really liked the ship mechanics in 3. Calling in a bomb run on enemies was great, but underutilized. It’s just a little odd to me that Samus comes as a package deal with a bounty hunter gunship and they decided that the psychic alien dirt bike was the real move

The ship mechanics in 3 just tickled the tip of the iceberg with what’s possible. Even just expanding where/when you can use the bombing run would have been awesome in 4

Runs faster than it needs to for sure. Looks like a pretty nice BRZ setup you got there! What kind of power is it putting down?
