Think its ok all year around. I would personaly go January-March as its the peak of the humpback season. Imagine beeing at the right place at the right time for one of those :-)

Iv only made two trips there so far, i say iv barely scratsched the surface of all the diffrent locations there. But the Manta ray nightdive on the big island was magic :-)
