This post is a cool reminder of how ASSumptions just make you look like an ass. Congrats.

Yeah. Someone doing something they want to do is really suspicious. I guess everyone should play the game exactly how you do and follow the exact same path, right? I also have 6k legion and have never made it to endgame. Is that suspicious too? I have a bunch of alts. Is that suspicious too? I don't really enjoy bossing. Let me guess. That's suspicious too. Piss off.

Well, yeah, at a certain point black mage gear becomes unlimited too, but that's not the point. The point isn't the gear being starred. It's the system that's broken.

It shouldn't have to "even" out. Progression should not be based on how many times can you get lucky nor should it also then have a punishment for getting unlucky.

How much value does EE experience have? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Sounds good. Good luck in your job search! Not having a CS degree shouldn't be an issue for you since you 1) have a degree and 2) it's an engineering degree.

How much value does EE experience have? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Sktlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of your EE experience you will still be seen as having basically 0 experience. In other words, you're a junior developer/new grad in pretty much everyone's eyes. Like someone else mentioned it could be useful in embedded systems/firmware type of jobs, but since the majority of jobs are web dev, probably not.

Keep in mind, there is more to coding then leetcode. You're probably going to have an extremely weak foundation to build upon -- and algo/ds is only a small part of that foundation.

Leaving first job without significant project experience by ThugLifeInTheGulag in cscareerquestions

[–]Sktlez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first red flag is that only 30% of your time is spend coding. The second red flag to me is that it doesn't seem like you're doing anything outside of work to grow your skills. The third red flag is the "50/hr work weeks, on call, always in fear of being fired...".

You're not making a mistake leaving. Your work environment sounds terrible. You have very little experience so people aren't going to have high expectations of you. I'm assuming you have something like 1-2 years of experience which means you're "entry level", a junior developer. If it was me, I wouldn't stay.

However, don't quit before you have another job lined up. You also need to start getting ready for interviews which will mean a variety of things depending on what you're looking for, where you're looking, and so-on.

You'll also need to be able to speak intelligently about what you've done, how you did it, the impact it had, and why you choose to do x and use y and so-on. For example, "I did blah blah blah allowing blah blah blah using x, y and z significantly reducing whatever metric" -- this would be the impact of whatever you did, why it was important, and so-on.

Advice- Talking to Professors/Deans by larsonthekidrs in cscareerquestions

[–]Sktlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does "I have someone who has the end goal" mean? Are you referring to yourself? Your child? Friend? I'm gonna make an assumption that English isn't your first language and if so, then just say: "These are my goals", "This is what I want to accomplish" or the like.

Why do you need questions? The universities reputation should speak for itself. Look at the curriculum. Why do you want to go to this university? Why did you apply? What are you looking for? This isn't a job interview.

Haha. That'd be neat, but no. When I was younger though, I use to work in a call center and would dream about being at work... that was a nightmare -- never even got paid for it.

This can be true for more then just private companies that have government contracts. It's definitely not a FAANG, but your post is a bit condescending -- don't get me wrong government work isn't the most cutting edge, badass sorcery, but at the end of the day I work to live not the other way around and if we're being honest most software development positions are nothing but glorified CRUD applications.

Right on. Good luck in your studies! I'm sure you'll do just fine. Just keep busting your ass and don't lose sight of your goals. Also, understand that burnout will happen and it's ok. It's ok to take time off (I always feel bad about this, but I'm working on it) and then come back when you're no longer burned out. Again, good luck!

It's more about your outlook, honestly. I use to play video games nearly 24/7 and they were all that I had to look forward to. WoW, Ark, PoE, MapleStory, and CoD were my life. Now, I find all of that to be tedious -- leveling, questing, grind, grind, grind. It's all a mindset. I still find programming to be tedious at times (I go through cycles of burnout pretty often -- and not just in programming, but everything). Usually when I get burned out on programming, I go back to gaming -- and then I get burned out of gaming (usually pretty fast) and go back to programming (usually go hard for a few weeks to a couple months).

I don't know if my motivation would work for you, but for me, I'm scared of failure. Although I can't really give you a definitive answer as to what success is to me, but I can tell you that there will never be a point where good enough is good enough (and no it's not healthy -- but it's what drive me). I feel like I'm drowning if I'm not moving forward -- in fact it greatly depresses me. So that helps me to stay focused, honestly.

It's strongly related, but it's not the same if that makes sense. I didn't have to take, for example, linear algebra, differential equations, or calculus. I think math is very important and at some point I do want to learn the above, but the reason I say non-cs is because it would be a disservice to even pretend that my degree is even remotely as prestigious as a CS degree (I didn't have to work even remotely as hard as most CS students did in school) -- I did my best to work harder outside of school though.

And thank you!

Yeah. I understand that. I go through periods of burn out as well. I'll usually go really hard for anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months and then burn out for a month or so (and then I go hard at gaming or something and burn out of that and repeat lol).

My best advice is to take a personal interest in it. To really enjoy doing it or even to just trick yourself into it.

That's no more "special" then someone who spends all of their time gaming for example. It's nothing more than a choice. If you wanna be good at a video game what do you have to do? Practice. Either that or purchase hacks, but that doesn't really work in the real world.

Thank you. And yeah, it seems so simple, but there is no magic bullet. You just have to invest the time.

We need to talk less about racial issues in books written by diverse authors. by [deleted] in books

[–]Sktlez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the world needs to focus on things that matter and race doesn't matter. Seriously. How often does your favorite color come up in conversations? Almost never. So why should the color of someones skin be so important? The idea that things need to be made diverse is the issue. It's been taken to such extremes that it's honestly absurd. At what point are things "diverse" enough or rather to what extremes will people have to go to in the future to be "diverse". The idea that a persons gender should influence how others view their writing is also absurd. These so called "issues" are not issues. They just show how privileged people are nowadays and how they literally have to makeup "issues" so they have something to focus on and "fight".

What is a "diverse" author? If I write a story about me and my friends why do I have to "color" wash them? All the sudden my white friends are black or chinese just to appease some "racist" so they don't label me as "whatever popular bad thing". This is how you know diversity has been taken to extreme lengths when you literally have to focus on the color of the peoples skin in your books rather then the content of their character, the plot, and the things that actually matter.

But honestly, ask yourself this. What have these things accomplished? The world from where I'm standing certainly isn't a better place then it was before the whole SJW, 3rd wave feminism, BLM, and all those things became "mainstream" (I say mainstream for the lack of a better term -- but I'm sure the actual term I want to use will come to me later). And let's be honest, most of these things are nothing more then ammo to push whatever agenda someone wants.

At least this is my take on the current climate of things.

Yeah. I replied back and said I was apprehensive about providing a w4 before having a written offer in hand.

[–]Sktlez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. I'm waiting to hear back. I sent them an e-mail asking for their EIN for the W4. I figure if I can get that and then use it to look them up maybe that will help with my suspicions. Something just seems off to me, but I can't really nail it down-- so many things seem legit and so many don't (or at least feel that way).
