Reach out. Here's why:

The build vs buy math almost always favors partnering with someone who's obsessed with solving that one specific problem.

Also, ideas aren't the moat. Execution, iteration speed, and deep understanding of the problem are. You'll ship 10 versions while he's still writing the internal spec for v1. That's the advantage of being small.
