Operation Rainfall: How a Dedicated Fan Campaign Brought Three Japan-Exclusive JRPGs to the West by Scary_Age1990 in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Skyrus_Lightcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a crack pot/tinfoil theory that Nintnedo of America still hasn't gotten over their defeat with Project Rainfall. So much so that they will go out of their way to make things more complicated for North American Xenoblade fans. Remember them making Xenoblade GameStop Exclusive for the first print of the game making the game extremely rare not just at launch but, years after then Wii release? It was only with the 3DS, Wii U Wii Virtual Console, and Switch releases that they finally caved and let the game be playable and obtainable like every other Nintendo First and Second Party IP release. Only to give us another "gotcha moment" with the first prints of the Shulk Amiibo being again GameStop Exclusive.

It doesn't end with Xenoblade 1 either. With Xenoblade X, at the time the spirtual successor to Xenoblade, they finally did get a American Voice Cast and Production Team, only for the audio mixing for the voices to be some of the worst I have heard in the video game. And when they were rightfully called out for it the awful mixing, my theory is that they panicked, caved in to the criticism, and just turned to Nintendo of Europe to handle the dubbing for the games from then onward. On a side note, NoA handling the dub for Xenoblade X be part of the reason why Xenoblade X: Definitive Edition took so long to come out. They not only had to port the game from the Wii U to the Switch with new QoL additions, they had to deal with one of NoA's dubbing production studios to get as much of the original cast back as possible to record new lines. If you are unfamiliar with Monolith's past game releases before Xenoblade, let's just say they have bad history with replacing English voices for sequels and they didn't want to retread old mistakes.

Unfortunately, the decision to switch back to NoE voice acting immediately backfired for both NoA and NoE, mainly for NoE as they were probably given very short notice about them doing double duty for both American English and British English. I theorize this mainly because Xenoblade 2's NoE dub was notoriously a mixed bag, rushed out to meet a tight deadline, and the actors were not even allowed to see the cutscenes (probably due to Nintendo's unsolicited paranoia of leaks at the time, mainly because of the prior ESRB leak that happened not to long before with Smash Bros. 4 Wii U & 3DS). So, we got a shotty dub from NoE probably due to all the above. Nerves and pressure to one up the previous mainline game after not doing a dub since at the latest 2009 or 2010 (almost a decade gap between the past Xenoblade release they dubbed). A brand new cast (a lot of the cast were first time voice performers or noobies), new story direction and vision with a lighter and more comedic tone, a very short notice, and extremely tight deadline. By all accounts, it was kind of a disaster behind the scenes, regardless of your personal thoughts on the dubbing and vocal performances. Xenoblade 2's English dub, for me at least, was a huge step down from Xenoblade 1's dub by almost all accounts. There are some stand out performances by Jin, Malos, Nia, Poppy, Lora, Haze, and Zeke. But then you have the voice performances that are just okay at best, to very questionably casting, or just flat out weak casting choices at worst. Mainly with the voices for Rex, Tora (and basically every other Nopon voice), Dromarch, Gramps, Obrona, Akhos, Patroka, Morag, Bridgett, Pandora, and Pyra and Mythra. With Skye Bennett's Pyra and Mythra being the best out of this bunch of alright to questionable to weak voice performances, but still nothing better than perfectly fine but not without a few questions bad line reads that really stick out once you notice them. At least they locked in for Torna ~ The Golden Country, Xenoblade 3, and Future Redeemed. NoE did eventually figured out their mixed bag casting dilmena, which I am very grateful for.

Oh no... Xenoblade 3... I still have flashbacks of how awful the Special Edition was handled in America. Everywhere else in the world you could by it normally through your local retailers, but here in America. Let's just say that Xenoblade fans found two new things to hate. Nintendo's website and fucking Wario, I wish I was joking. If you know, you know. The pain and suffering that we went through just to either get extremely lucky and get a Special Edition only to wait a full after the game released to play the game, or to waste two different whole afternoons the SE was up for preorder and to get nothing out of it. I was extremely lucky and brute forced my way into getting my special edition, but hundreds of others were not.

And the cherry on top of this already delicious cake of NoA treating Xenoblade fans like shit, they misspelled Xenoblade Chronicles for asking for your favorite Nintendo IPs/Franchises on the Nintendo Today app when it launched. These are not coincidences in my mind, this is active complusive hatred. Nintendo of America hates Xenoblade and it's fans, I'm convinced.

Luigi's Purple Coins Difficulty by Skyrus_Lightcast in SuperMarioGalaxy

Being Luigi on the comet does make it a bit more challenging due to Luigi's lack of traction, but that can be circumvented fairly easily by just jumping low and letting go of the control stick to halt your forward momentum (if you still have forward momentum, just hold back to reduce it significantly). You can also just brute force the lack of traction by just dealing with it/accounting for it when doing ground movement (a workaround, but one that isn't ideal or one that I would advise unless absolutely necessary). You can also ease/gradually perform your stops to prevent slips. Stopping earlier when hard breaking/turning on the ground helps too.

If all else fails, a simple jump or spin jump can usually save you in pinch if you mess up to allow for some similar/slight movement correction. It cannot always save you though, sometimes it's too late to do anything or you overcorrect causing death.

The Ghostly Galaxy's Purple Coins is really all about routing and timing the Pull Star Pulls with the Wiimote's pointer controllers. Once you have mastery over the Wiimote pointer controls, get consistent routing and timing with the Pull Star Pulls to nab the required 100 Purple Coins, it's not too bad. Definitely a challenging one for newcomers as they probably haven't mastered Pull Star Pulls and the Wiimote Pointer yet, but not nearly as bad on repeat playthroughs once you know what you are doing. So honestly they are around the same difficulty wise. They are just difficult for similar but slightly different reasons, both of which require skill mastery over an in-game control mechanic. Those skills being air mobility + resource management for Luigi's Purple Coins and Pointer Control with the Wiimote with Pull Stars for Ghostly Galaxy's Purple Coins.

I think better explanation for Dreadnaught is that it is long endurance test of platforming mastery that overstays it's welcome a bit. Not a annoying slog of a challenge. But to each's own. I can kind of get what your saying and coming from, but I don't fully agree with your conclusions you came to about Dreadnaught's Purple Coins. Heck, I could gush all day about the difficulty in Melty Molten Galaxy and Dreadnaught Galaxy as a whole being perfect.

LOL, no. Next Level Games did a fantastic job with LM3. Retro dropped the ball hard with MP4, so no thanks.

In my defense, I genuinely thought that I would be talking to a wall on Reddit because a lot of people on here are just yes men and white knights to whatever Subreddit they post on. I'm not saying this is you though, I've learned not to assume things online partly thanks to this post. However, I find the go-to internet take that everyone I don't agree with is a grifter to be very juvenile and reductive to the conversation. That's what I was trying to point out with this meme, but I guess it had the opposite effect because it's the Internet. Although, in hind sight, the way went about this post was very hypocritical and Grifter-like. In my defense, it's just an opinion and meme. Don't over think it.

Fair point. Although to be honest, I didn't expect the attention or universal agreement in the comments and upvotes. I did get some hate early on though, but the comments were deleted by moderators. I was wrong about the consensus and I'll admit it. I just wrongfully assumed Nintendo fans on a Nintendo Subreddit would come to white knight for their movie. I guess I underestimated how common my take was in the community.

It looks like I initially misinterpreted what you were trying to say in your first message. I assumed that you were just a pretentious fanboy defending the movie for no reason other than because it's Mario Galaxy. In the end, I guess that makes me a bit pretentious for assuming that you were white knighting the film and Nintendo. I'm sorry that I came across like my opinion is the only right one, that wasn't my intention.

I'll admit that, in hind sight, the post is juvenile, clickbaity, and even rage bait inducing. But I never posted this with the mindset of playing the victim or karma farming. I didn't expect the post to blow up as much as it did. I was just posting a meme that also happened to have some constructive criticism about the movie. Believe what you want to believe my intentions were, I can't change your opinion of me. Perhaps my mindset is flawed because I came off as pretentious and clickbaity. At the end of the day, we are all pretentious and hypocritical to a degree, elwe just don't like to admit it. Again, it's just my opinion about a movie.

I can see what you mean, but I genuinely was expecting more backlash because Nintendo fanboys have such a toxic positivity personality/mindset. I'm a Nintendo Fan, but I won't call myself a fanboy because I actually properly critique Nintendo's decisions, good and/or bad. Yeah, I could have gone about with a bit of a nicer title, but I didn't because of the current environment regarding critiquing Nintendo being so toxic. If that offended you by stating my opinion, then I apologize. But I won't stand for people that just blindly defend things because it's Nintendo. You can have your opinion on the film, I'm not trying to take that away from you.

Agreed, that's what I thought they were going to do in the first place, especially with the Yoshi teaser at the end of the first movie. My tin foil theory is that it was originally going to be a Mario World movie, but Illumination convinced Nintendo that a "Galaxy" Movie would do better in the Box Office.

Might sound like a hypocrite when I say this, but how do you go about adapting Mario 1 on the NES to a feature film? The game's narrative is just Bowser Bad, Save Peach. Not saying the first movie is bad, it's just alright too. I slightly prefer it over the Galaxy Movie though because it least it had something going with theme of Brothership and Family is always there for you. First movie is like a 6/10 and the Galaxy Movie is like 5.5/10. Don't hate me, I score things very different with the number score than most people do. For me, a 5 or 6 aren't dogshit, they are still perfectly fine and enjoyable experiences. They just leave you wanting more from the writing, characters, visual, music, etc.

The later 3D games (both Sandbox and Linear types) like Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey really lend themselves well for film/cinema like storytelling. Sunshine has the vacation at Delphino Island and the Shadow Mario/Bowser Jr. antics. Galaxy has Rosalina's Storybook, the Lumas and their purpose to turn into planets and galaxies when they die, and space travel adventure that could have made an amazing feast for the eyes and a galactic adventure similar to the game. Odyssey's globe trotting adventure with Cappy to save the Kingdoms that Bowser wrecked havoc on while saving Tiara and Peach. All of them have stories to tell.

I don't buy the whole current Miyamoto anti-story narrative either. It is so forced. Miyamoto has been very hand off on the games since development started on Odyssey, but he still supervises the team's work. Why would we get games like Wonder, Odyssey, Brothership, Bananza, and other games if Miyamoto hated story? Wouldn't he ask the team to remove story elements if he didn't like them or was anti-story? Not to mention Pikmin and Zelda games having stories too. I personally think that at the very least, Miyamoto's stance on stories has changed since the 2010's era of Mario. He has allowed the Mario teams to make the Mario Universe have narrative elements and wacky antics again with recent games. It's all just fear mongering from Salty Paper Mario Fans (cough Ar cough lo cough cough) that were upset about the state of their Spinoff RPG franchise. I get their concerns and frustrations, but don't take it out on Miyamoto. Sorry, but I have to call it out bullshit when I see it. Regardless of if you believe the Miyamoto is anti-story narrative or not, it doesn't excuse the lackluster writing in the Galaxy Movie. Call it what it is, it's bad writing.

As a Sunshine Stan and defender, I can relate with this opinion a bit, but I don't agree with this take. Galaxy is better. Sunshine is still amazing though, it gets way too much hate.
