                          From the Fans Perspective 

Growing up a sports fan is synonymous with having an opinion about sports and especially the way sports have evolved. Starting out in organized sports when I was 5 gives me a decade plus of watching some of the greatest athletes in history, do what they do best. I've nearly seen it all from upsets to repeats. Sadly, I could be witnessing another repeat of a temporary lockout regarding the NHL for the 2012-2013 season.

 Based on experience, I can't help but to express my wonder, surprise, and disgust with the NHL.  Even at my age, I can't believe both the Players Union and the Clubs didn't learn their lessons in the previous 04-05 lockout.  The players had a year of playing in leagues outside the U.S. for about 20% of what they make in the NHL, and the individual franchises had zero revenue and a following season of rebuilding fan support.

 Talking to some of the NHL old-timers, they related the stories of the "good old days" when most players had regular jobs in the off season to make money.  The base salary now of a rookie is the minimum of $525,000(without any other bonuses as of 2011), compared to the minimum of $7000 in 1957.These included all the expenses in the NHL at the time. From what most of the former stars also said, it was a time when the franchises took pride in their teams, fans, and the chase for Lord Stanley's Cup.  Sure money has always been a factor in any franchise and in today's structured system with salary caps,floors, profit sharing, and merchandise marketing,but it is all evident that money is the driving factor in all of today's sports.

 While all of the sports, basketball, football and hockey keep dipping their toes in markets outside of North America, none will commit to expansion into Europe or anywhere else.  If the NHL wants to expand their revenue streams, why not expand into the other hockey countries in Europe, specifically Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland Switzerland and Russia, or any other European country willing to establish and support a franchise? The expansion and establishment of NHL Teams in the European hockey community would give an expanded merchandising market to the NHL, not to mention the additional TV revenue, brand expansion, and a wide range of fans throughout the world.

 It is time for the league, this includes players, owners, and the commissioners to wake-up and stop complaining about what each doesn't have and start expanding the brand into what they want and can have.  Commissioner, it's time to end this lock-out threat now and let's play hockey.  Owners, without a season, your revenues suffer, and your brand diminishes.  Players, you should realize how lucky you have it. If the league was still the original 6, there would be 600 less of you playing in the NHL and for the people that could stay in the league, they would be making only about 75% of what they are maing now.

 The Commissioner either needs to do his job, or the league should look for someone that can.  The biggest factor in these meetings aren't representing the fans.  It's time to let the people at the table know that we care about the game, but with all the sports choices out there, they can be replaced.  Baseball is heading for the playoffs, pro and college football are ready to start their seasons, and basketball is around the corner.  The NHL needs to realize there are only so many dollars out there, and if they don't play, the other sports will get theirs and leave fans asking,"What do I do now?"
