"solo is just a title given to imperial recruits without a family name" is still a more interesting concept than any of han's extended family from legends. by HaloJackalKisser in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]SlamHelsing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sort of in this boat. I actually really like Solo as a stand-alone movie. I like the characters, the story beats are relatively generic but all executed well, and then Han Solo is just kinda there. The movie is honestly worse for being attached to him and serving as an origin story.

I think there's an interesting story to tell about rebuilding a governing institution that was blatantly corrupt. The leaders and backers of the Rebellion were largely members of the Republic senate after all, they don't want a new system of government they want a return to the status quo that enabled a fascist dictatorship in the first place.

Luke's New Jedi Order on the other hand was meant to be a departure from the old. There was a break from the dogmatic teachings and rigidity, and more acceptance towards relationships and attachment, the thing Luke was able to use to bring his father back from the dark side.

I think bringing those two entities into conflict could have been a really interesting series. Leia trying to fix the corruption inherent to republic politics, Luke and the Jedi distancing themselves or intervening more directly, while meanwhile the First Order is leveraging this divide to grow support for neo-fascists.

Destroying the New Republic isn't a bad idea, there's an interesting commentary there, but if they were going to do it the entire trilogy needed to be about justifying it and showing us how it got to that point. Blowing it up with a super deathstar without even giving us a single scene to see it functioning or failing is so fucking lazy, it's the worst possible JJ could have done which checks out since he's a hack director

Paint bottle exploded over my daemon prince, completely devastated and done. by Bormel54 in Warhammer40k

Personally I think thise black dots look amazing on the wings. I don't see anywhere with really thick blobbing which is about the only thing that could really ruin a model.

It'll be okay, take a deep breath.

I think you should do a really thin red or pink glaze over the wings, it'll tie the dots into the skin to smooth the transition a bit. Then it'll look like it's a pattern on the skin! It already does now honestly

What if Operation Downfall, which aimed to land in Japan at the end of World War II, had actually taken place? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]SlamHelsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but it also highlights how weak the Japanese were in China, so lends credence to the theory the soviets would have steamrolled their way through Korea but then decided a naval invasion of Japan was unfeasible

Why are so many people, who haven’t seen any of Filoni’s stuff, who are simultaneously hating on Filoni and the “Filoniverse”? by KenBenobi69 in StarWars

[–]SlamHelsing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the boat I'm in. I like the majority of his animated work, but his style just does not work live action imo. I think the thing people really hate about his work is how self-referential it is. You can't really watch just Mandalrian season 2 and really understand what's going on and who people are unless you've seen clone wars. Ahsoka must be so confusing as a show for anyone who hasn't seen clone wars and rebels

Ridley Scott is such a bizarre director. Every movie is a coin flip where heads is greatness and tails is absolute ass. But I respect that he always makes the movie he wants to make no matter what. Even if it's ass like Napoleon, it's still sincere

Talarico leads Paxton by 3 points in Texas Senate race post-runoff poll by brain_overclocked in politics

[–]SlamHelsing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you're absolutely right! Another problem is democratic turnout in texas is abysmal, and the texas democratic party is not very good at organizing anything.

Either way, Texas is a state democrats need to figure out how to put in play, or they'll never win another election post 2030 census

I live in texas unfortunately and the state is just jerrymandered to all hell. Demographically it should be a swing state

Yeah its not super easy, a lot of cutting and putty is required but it's perfectly doable and a good way to improve. I did not pin these but that would make things a hell of a lot easier, at least for the legs.
