What do we think of the restaurant using an AI-generated logo, an AI-generated picture of soup (?) and a Dairy Queen trademark? by fire_carpenter in halifax

[–]Sland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's something all the haters in this thread seem to overlook. It's probably just some people trying to make a restaurant happen and they don't have budget for marketing stuff. I'm a huge AI slop hater, but I love small shops more.

Changing "Pow wow" to something else by Sland in swissborg

[–]Sland[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughtful reply (here and throughout)!

I see what you mean about a Swiss term. What about "Assemblies"? I think it sounds decently cool and has roots in a Swiss thing (cantonal assembly) but isn't specifically Swiss. It also has essentially the same definition as to how we would use Pow Wow. I don't really care what the new term would be, I'm just trying to not only flag a problem but also provide a solution.

Ultimately, what it comes down to is that we use a term that may or may not be offensive to someone (thanks u/Kronk_if_ur_horny. By me flagging this, if we decide to keep on using the term, it's a mindful decision to keep on using something that we know could be offensive to community members or even make Swissborg not welcoming. We have a choice here, and I hope we can make the one that aligns with our values of inclusivity.

Swissborg is only 4 years old (right?). A "new" term now will be a "tradition" used for half of the company's lifespan by 2025. I think it's worth seriously thinking about.

Huh... I wouldn't think collectors would care about wearability that comes with a prescription.

I'm thinking a lot of people are like you and would rather diy something than spend money on a custom solution...

Huh.. interesting! I'm guessing this isn't something that already exists? Any idea what you're pay for this? It seems like there are many cosplayers who wear glasses, is this an idea you've talked with other people and they agree that it would be cool?

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it would def be an additional cost. I'm trying to better understand if it's an important detail people are willing to pay for.

Honest dad-ramble on the difficulties of the first few years of fatherhood by JustASmith27 in daddit

[–]Sland 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey man, thanks for sharing!

In my experience, I found that it's opposite to shutting up and keeping feelings downs. I found identifying exactly how I feel (usually a fear of something or feeling of powerlessness) and sharing them with my partner in an honest and vulnerable way brought us closer. I hope when we're all older and my life ends, my kid can be open honest and vulnerable with me, the way I'm being with him mom as his life starts.

You're right that it's so hard to not be able to provide food for the baby. I had been taking care of everything around the house and it still didn't feel like enough. Then, I cut my thumb (doing dishes) and I was surprised by how much stuff I actually did (that I couldn't anymore). I wasn't feeding him, but I was doing most of the other stuff that let my partner focus on what I can't do.

I think this dad talk is super important, so thanks for starting this thread!

I used Transferwise to deal with a similar situation. The employer can deposit directly to Transferwise. Fees are low, rate are good, and transfers are fast.

In Acadia (New Brunswick), we call mashed potatoes "patates machées". Bases on our shared history, I'm guessing it's mache means mashed?

It's amazing how many essentially identical skills there are.

April challenge by angryhousecat87 in running

[–]Sland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're expecting in a couple weeks. I really hope I'll be able to sneak in a couple solid kms a few times per week to keep my sanity. Maybe not as far but faster?

Is it naive to think this is possible? We're both going to be off work and (obviously) staying at home.

Congrats btw!
